As a Canadian I'll even give them a pass on this one. They simply aren't prepared for this kind of weather.

The part of NC that Dale Jr lives, and I live in....is mostly northern tarnsplants. Ohio, PA, NY, NH. So i get a kick when we are blamed for not being able to not only not be able to drive in snow, but block up the highway because a minivan from Ohio is doing 50 in the hammer lane, usually with an egg on the roof.

Oh come on, it's never not going to be a joke about the army coming in after the ice storm, even though it was absolutely needed.  I wasn't in ON during the storm, but I've re-read the reports of the roads, and now have had to explain to folks why the army did need to come in after that mess.

But we're still gonna laugh about it, because we can.

Pfft...I live in South Florida. Between November and April, there are 4x more stupid car accidents being caused by people from NY/NJ and Conn. than any other time of the year. It's 69° and sunny here.

Regardless of weather, shiatty drivers gonna shiat.

Maybe the greater Charlotte area in general, but I grew up in Mooresville, and it's much more Southern than you might expect.

Because Peter Karmanos moved them here before we could land the Major League Baseball franchise we actually want.

IIRC we just didn't want them. Hornets were okay, and the Panthers were just starting to play in Charlotte. And I think the move from Hartford was some kind of clusterfark anyway. I don't think the old coliseum was interested in hosting them and Independence Arena was too small. So they wound up playing in some shiathole in Greensboro. Don't quote me on that. It's been a while.

And before anyone says this means nothing, Seattle was one of the cities named as a future site for a team in a report that also included Vegas.

A local radio host here, (Greg Kerr) interviewed the COO of the Charlotte Checkers (Tera Black) about this. It was interesting to hear but the mascot description had the highlight. She said that her normal mascot person was not able to make it. So another checkers employee volunteered to try doing mascot things in the mascot costume. Problem was that the normal person in the costume was a 6 foot 3 dude and the volunteer was a 5 foot 1 lady. Thats when the COO said "Her poor furry crotch was dragging the ground" Thats when my local radio show host lost it for a minute giggling and allowed as how he had never heard or expected to hear that phrase on the radio before.

Heres the normal mascot

San Jose has the Sharks and their AFL team the barracuda and they both play at the same rink. Presumably to save costs of having two rinks and to add income to the main rink. What this means in scheduling is that the Barracuda play a lot of early daytime matinee games every time they both play home games on the same day. Which is kinda cool for me since I listen to the AHL Condors games on the adio and get to hear a few games a year before noon when they play the Barracuda

It means nothing. Seattle will get an expansion team. Relocating an Eastern team West does nothing. If any team in the EC relocates in the near future, it'll go to Quebec.

Heh. Hadn't heard that. I saw the article about this on Deadspin. It said she manned the penalty box too and that the PA guy was some random advertising exec or something so he just called a bunch of people by their numbers when there were substitutions.

/I'd get in her penalty box. Furry and dragging or not...

I couldn't tell you specifically but it seems like it's been at least 2 years since they've been in the Cable Box. Independence got a ton of update IIRC. Couldn't say firsthand as I avoid all of Monroe Road and Independence. At least until you get out of Onion County.

Also- Lynn Wheeler's baby? Nice. You're definitely a real Charlottean.

Either way, it's going to be a huge shift for youth hockey in WA state.  With an NHL team in Seattle, the community support for development hockey will likely surge dramatically.  My family will be left with virtually no option but to move back there from Spokane just to remain competitive.

That too. Didn't Karmanos have some kind of issue with having to move in a hurry though? I seem to recall that the whole thing wasn't really well thought out. But yeah, not that we didn't want them but Charlotte can't, or at least coudn't then, handle three major sports. Even now it's debatable but not likeley. Look at how long it took to get the Knights up from Rock Hill. And that ass clown who kept suing to prevent that so we could get MLB thast not enough people want. AND Marcus Smith's constants attempts to get MLS here which NOBODY wants. Hell, the City didn't even want to deal with Memorial Stadium when the County kept trying to give it to them. Goddammit FDR opened that thing and nobody wants it. What's that tell ya?

Now that's ironic !!! That's the exact same thing all of us in Connecticut said when Karmanos bought the Whalers in 1994.
