Did they have a manager wonder out loud in a meeting about why they were wasting so much time on "weeaboo"?

I will have you know that I shower twice a day and I don't have an abnormal knowledge of anime characters.  I just know where the Wikis are.  And TV Tropes.

/there's usually more background info if you read the manga, anyway

Actually, Otaku are just massive fans of 'something'.  You could have Idol Otaku (fans of idol music), JAV Otaku (porn fanboys), Audio Otaku, you name it.

That's what non-Japanese people have made it mean in other languages, yes. The original Japanese term is rather less kind; the dictionary definition is pretty accurate.

Oh, I was referring to it just being an anime thing.  It's really just a geeky to obsessed fan of something.  Idol fanboys are probably the worst, with voice actress otaku being up there as well.

Non-Otaku answer is she is no age because she doesn't exist.

With the rise of hikikomori, the negative overtones of otaku (specifically, lack of social ability and inability to relate to others outside of that niche) has slowly degraded and the term is a now a bit more like "obsessed" than "freak".  My father in law calls Makuhari Messe (a large conference hall that hosts cons for everything from model trains to rock concerts) "Otaku Messe".  The word is still a few rungs socially worse than "nerd" but I get the impression that it's not as bad as it once was.

OTAKING!

I am so sad it took that long for that reference to be made.

I translate manga and occasionally hentai for fun and (not much) profit.

For the record,  I am not an otaku.  I merely enable them.

My understanding is, in terms of increasing loserness, it goes freeter, neet, hikikomori. Where does otaku fit in these days?
