(The Hollywood Reporter)   Will behind-the-scenes controversies and scandals impact the Oscars? Well, at least that would probably result in a more diverse set of nominations   ( hollywoodreporter.com) divider line

James Franco and John Depp just need to stop already and go away.

a 2014 Playboy interview where he wondered aloud why he wasn't allowed to use the C-word.

Never read the whole interview, but could that simply be because Oldman is British?

Might juice the TV ratings too.

Here's a radical idea: vote for the best performance,  the best directing, the best writing. The moment you even start to consider sex, orientation,  religion, race, political views you are moving out of bounds of what you're supposed to be doing. Same goes for "I'm voting for X because they should have won last time."

/would give my left nut to see MacFarlane host again

But why should they? Awards voters get to anonymously vote for whoever they want. While we might like them to do what you say, in their shoes, the most rational thing to do is to use the power to vote up issues they want supported or to give awards to their friends.

That said, the awards are broken. If you haven't already figured out that producers gamify the audience by releasing Oscar bait, you just have to watch what wins and what doesn't. Spotlight was a good film. But it wasn't Sicario, Inside Out, Ex Machina or The Big Short.

They already don't do that, b/c the voting bloc is so damn old, white and male that all they nominate is crap. La La Land should have never even been nominated, let alone Electoral College'd at the end.

James Franco and Johnny Depp...

I'll be in my bunk.

He'd just make a cut-away gag about it involving a moose and a massage. Then he'd go relax later in his caviar-filled hot tub while masturbating with a twenty-thousand dollar dildo.

We could increase diversity by simply not reflexively nominating Meryl Streep.
