So you can get expelled from a college for posting something distasteful on the Internet.

I wonder if they have 1984 in the College Library.

If colleges ditch every student who says something ignorant then a lot of faculty will have to find real jobs.

Yeah, what they really need is a merit based system when deciding when to expel students.

Good.

Well, at least she feels ashamed for what she did. . . even if it took getting kicked out of a university for her to feel it.

Hey, given today's political climate, she could have come out, rallying all the deplorable out there about how this is reverse discrimination against white people. I'll take this over that.

Haha, she'll be lucky to get a job as assistant manager at Arby's. Or Breitbart editor, I guess.

Yeah, you can get expelled from a college for violating the student code of conduct.

Well I can't, I keep my stupid shiat to myself. Then again when I first went to college we didn't have social media.

Student codes of conduct are nonsense. We have laws, they apply at schools, we don't need more rules to constrain students when they should be at their most unconstrained. Look how this genius learned not to be a racist, or at least not to show everyone you're a racist.

I went to a college that used codes of conduct before MySpace was a thing.  It was a way to get rid of unrepentant assholes.  You can be an ass, but as some point if you get called out on it enough, you better tone it down a bit.

I'm curious as to the reasons the university had for expelling her. I wouldn't think that "being a racist garbage biatch" is actually grounds for expulsion unless she threatened or harassed another student. I myself have been familiar with many a racist garbage biatch who was not expelled from a public institution.

I mean, she clearly made the right decision in terms of getting her ass out of there, as her fellow students would likely have made her life a living hell. But I'm wondering if she was actually expelled under some student code of conduct, or just "encouraged to withdraw."

Oh so she's from New Jersey. If she was from the South the story would be all about how backward the South is.

I have a hard time believing a university would expel a student for saying something dumb. Cause that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. I'm guessing that's just the story she told her parents when she stayed on academic probation too long.

Expelled?  doubtful.  I would think the University would know there is no way that would fly.
FTA:
The 19-year-old told the newspaper she had been expelled from the university and was returning home to New Jersey. The university would not confirm her expulsion. Spokesman Chris Bryant told the AP he could "only provide directory information, and this student is no longer enrolled."

Well, once you become an internet famous racist it's pretty easy for someone to quietly mention they feel unsafe on campus with you.

I'm not saying that happened, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone felt uncomfortable around her.

Violated student conduct policy. Made statements threatening and harrassing to a protected class of students (in this case, black students).

They couldn't have a student code of conduct that restricts speech of this nature at a public universitu. Kinda unconstituional despite people wishing it was otherwise. And unless she made direct threats, it's an uphill battle to kick her out. No, she was prolly convinced by her soroity sisters to kindly go away.

We assume she was expelled.  The university just said she was no longer enrolled, which is likely all they're allowed to say per FERPA.

My guess is, when people found out she was a raging racist, her fellow students wanted nothing to do with her and her sorority kicked her out.  This made her social life miserable, and when she talked to her advisor, her advisor told her honestly that the best thing she could do would be to leave UA and seek a college education somewhere else.

Could be both. Or perhaps when she met with the Dean of Students' Office, she was "unpleasant" towards the staff and counselors.

That seems very likely. And, to be the real victim, she has subsequently been telling everybody that she was expelled, instead of admitting the truth.

"Alpha Phi is a diverse, values-based organization ..."

The most segregated place on a college campus is the fraternity and sorority system.

*sigh* This could have been me.

I come from a pretty rural and very white town. My father wasn't really racist, but certainly didn't know any black people and would sometimes use some pretty racially-offensive terms when hanging out with his friends. They'd all chuckle about it and nobody ever registered the slightest offense.

So when I get to college, some dudes in my dorm were some pretty stereotypical racist Georgia frat boy types who had no problem tossing around the N-word. Always having been a follower, and not really having the upbringing to see how wrong it was, I kind of fell into the same habit. N-word jokes. Calling my (white) roommate the N-word because he ate the last packet of ramen. I can tell you that it was never something I said out of hate; it was more like being a 9-year old trying out a new swear word: the thrill of saying something taboo.

Anyway, it came to a head a few months later. We were hanging out watching a football game with some friends, including a friend-of-a-friend who was a black student. Watching an amazing play, I blurted out "look at that n-word run!" As soon as I said it, I realized what I had done. Nobody really said anything to me about it, but I was suddenly so heartbroken and disgusted with myself. That wasn't the kind of person I was and wasn't the kind of person I wanted to be. I never really apologized to the black kid -- or anyone else for that matter -- because I was too ashamed of myself. But that was the last time in my life I ever used that or any other slur.

So when I read this story, I realize that in a slightly different time or place, this girl could just as easily have been me. I feel for her. I know she's ashamed, and she deserves to be. But I also hope that, instead of the traditional internet pile on, everybody just gives her some space to think about who she is and how she wound up like this. Maybe she'll withdraw into a place full of resentment and hate and become an even worse person. But maybe she'll use this as a learning experience and dedicate herself to becoming a more thoughtful, caring person.

Why do these Jersey hose bags always look Armenian?

Incidentally, I swear the Kardashian clan must be Jersey trash.  I wonder why there hasn't been a Jersey Shore/Kardashian mashup.  It could be called Trash to Cash: How to Be a Fame Whore

Oh, and F this Biatch.  Not that it offends me, but she is clearly a spoiled little biatch that needed to have her a$$ whooped bigly.

Her words and the thoughts behind them are repugnant, but an immediate expulsion seems like a strange response. Wouldn't it make more sense for an educational institution to try to ... educate her?

If "safe space" means a place that's safe from ideas, rather than a place that's safe for ideas, then it isn't fulfilling an educational mission. That would be more like a custodial mission, I think. The only reason we have to have space for lots of ideas is so we have the ability to engage with them enough so we can figure out which ones are the good ideas and which ones are the bad ideas. Suppressing dissent because it makes people uncomfortable makes sense in some venues but less sense in an educational one, I think.

In other words, if an entire university can't figure out how to teach a student that racism is bad, what can it do?

I rolled my eyes at the PR nothing-word "values-based". Every social group has values, even neo-Nazis; they just happen to be bad ones.

I have a novel idea. Don't be racist.

I mean is that really so difficult?
