When I was presented an opportunity to appear on an 'art corner' (actually 'aato koonaa') on Osaka TV in 1983, wearing my triple-breasted Malenkov suit, I was informed that I'd be fitted up with a wig and slathered in makeup, both of which I attempted weakly to resist, to no avail.

They popped the rug on my chrome-dome and when I peeked in the mirror I just melted. It just looked so absolutely RIGHT in so many ways. I joked about taking it home with me and was informed with a cold smile that I was looking at four thousand dollars.

I suspect that varied wigs we see on Patrick Stewart's skull are around that range as well, or more. Even if they don't look it.

...I wish I could find a pic of it - my Google-fu is weak this morning - but I remember that the TNG producers did get him into a toup on screen once.  It was the ep where there was a flashback scene of Picard and Dr Crusher standing beside Jack Crusher's casket.

/Reasonably sure I'm not hallucinating this

I've never really thought about that before. Now that you mentioned it I will go with the theory that they could - but Captain Picard is such a confident badass that he just said "fark it,this is cool" and went with it.

YMMV

The episode is "Violations". Which is where the picture is actually from. You can tell by the thing on the right side of his face.

I recall a story where someone asked Patrick Stewart. He responded with, "its not that they can't fix it, its just that in the future they don't care".

Absolutely.

When my hair started thinning out, I started shaving my head every time it got out to crewcut length.

The amount of time and effort I saved was astonishing.

Back in the day, old school nerds claimed Kirk was the superior captain because he had hair and Picard was bald.

Overall, we all know who is truly the *best and baddest* Starfleet captain.

I watch TOS and TNG 6 nights a week unless the episode is a stinker (most of TOS third season and TNG first couple of seasons have a lot of weak episodes) and nowadays I just crack up at the Shatnerisms.  After all these years, I've also developed a disdain for Wesley Crusher episodes.

Stewart is amazing in that production, as is David Tennant as Hamlet. As is the rest of the cast.  It is without a doubt one of the best realizations of the play ever put to film.

There's a BBC version with David Tennant as Hamlet?  I thought The_Philosopher_King was referring to the late 70s/early 80s one with Derek Jacobi as The Great Procrastinator.

Yep. And that's why Tennant's last season of Doctor Who was that mini-season of four specials.

Yes, I meant the one from 1980 with Derek Jacobi. I liked the 2009 David Tennant version. He was astoundingly good. But I didn't like moving it to modern clothes. I missed the 16th century vibe. But I'd still recommend it to anyone.

He looks decades too young to be a starship captain.  Maybe a head of security, or second in command.  But it really is a good fake.

I am enjoying the whole crew of Discovery, but would have liked to see more of Captain Georgiou.
