I was unaware he was part fish. Would have thought that'd be more widely known. It certainly makes all of his accomplishments more impressive.

It's a good thing there's no institutionalized racism  in the US because otherwise this would be awkward.

I grew up right outside DC and lived in Chicago for most of my adult life, then moved to VA. Holy fark moving to the South was like culture shock. These rednecks wish each other a happy "Lee-Jackson Day" and fly confederate flags on MLK day. They talk about the Civil War "war of Northern aggression" like it happened last year. I even been called a carpetbagger before. Who the hell still says that??

Actual song I've actually heard sung: "

Three hundred thousand Yankees
lie still in Southern dust.
We got three hundred thousand
'afore they conquered us.
They died of Southern fever,
and Southern steel and shot;
and I wish we'd killed three million,
'nstead of what we got.

reminds be of a Penn Jillette told on his radio show

To a foreigner a Yankee is some who lives in the USA
To a southerner a Yankee is someone who lives in the north
To people in the north a Yankee is someone who lives in New England
To people in New England a Yankee is someone who lives in Vermont and had pie for breakfast

I've never been called a carpet bagger, but I've been called northerner plenty of times.

Yeah, the do love them some institutionalized racism in the heavily Republican South.

What part of VA did you live in? I've lived in central and southwest Virginia 21 out of my 51 years and I don't ever recall anyone even acknowledging Lee-Jackson Day on a personal level, or being moved one way or another on MLK Day.

Think that's bad, in Florida/Alabama the Rednecks call it James Earl Ray Day.  They all laugh when they do it, because this has been the cutting edge of redneck humor for a little over 40 years now.

Had a neighbor kid a few years back (he's early 30s now) that had one those rebel decals in the back window of his pick up. It was an apolitical statement that was more about personal rebellion than anything else.

But this was in Minnesota, and this kid was as Minnesotan as they come, and no matter the arguments of those around him (including myself), he wouldn't give it up.

To be fair, he was / is as dumb as a bag of hammers.

Central VA currently, in the no-mans land between Richmond and Cville. It gets a little banjo-y around here.

I'll happily take any holiday that gets me a day off. Screw The Veterans Day, Men's Rights Day, Plantation Owner's Day, Kill Whitey Day, Pedophile Appreciation Day, I don't care if I get to stay home and get paid.

Well, I guess it's nice that Spike Lee and Samuel L. Jackson have their own day, but I'm at a loss to understand why.  I can see Samuel L. Jackson for his inherent badassitude, but I've never really been a fan of Spike Lee.

We live in a country founded by the same kind of treason. Seems pretty hypocritical to complain about them celebrating theirs unless you take the same stance every fourth of july.

The fact that you apparently posted that in earnest indicates you lack the basic logical skills necessary to evaluate why everyone is now laughing and dismissing any future opinion you put forth.

Even if you take away the fact that slavery and racism was the driving force behind the South's uprising, the two still don't equate.  The colonies had no American representation in Parliment.  Colonists were often denied the right of a jury trial, instead tried by British judges.    And it was only when Fat George wanted to raid the colonies for all they were worth that the uprising happened.  His father basically forgot the colonies existed and let them do their own thing.

The South had the representation in congress they agreed to.  There was a framework in place for them to directly effect the change in law.  But that wasn't good enough for them.

I often try to convince people the Democratic Party's "Jefferson-Jackson" dinner is Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson.
