Hey that was interesting. Never saw the original though. Or if I did, I don't remember it. Before clicking the link, I thought it was maybe that stupid uga-chaka dancing baby.

Pretty sure "Spoon Man" was the first viral video, if only because it was the demo clip that came bundled with Apple's Quicktime software.

Looks like some weird clip they picked up from the editing room floor of one of those FMV CD-ROM games that were all the rage back in the early 90s.

F*ck off, Wired. I've never seen nor heard of that. The Exploding Whale is the first true viral video.

To be viral, it has to spread organically (i.e. person to person, whether the physical file itself, or links to the video), not be something everyone who buys or downloads [x] gets packed in with it.

I do remember that video, but not specifically from that time period.  I probably saw it a few years after, on eBaumsworld (God that site went to shiat) or some pre-YouTube site.

It's easy to forget what it used to be like back then.  Hell, I started on the 'net probably about two years after the WWW became a thing, using text-only surfing from a dialup Unix shell.  Good times.

I remember getting that video from Hotline around that time. There were a few viral videos that circulated at the time. If I remember correctly, that included "Winnie the Pooh Worships Satan" and "Furby From Hell."

I don't get all of the references to Ebaumsworld lately like it was the pinnacle of early internet entertainment.  Everyone hated ebaumsworld because they would borrow content and stick their logo on it.

Everyone I knew went here, albinoblacksheet, newgrounds, etc...

The Star Wars Kid video is from 2002? Good lord I'm getting old because I would have guessed 1995. It's barely a year older than Facebook.

2018-01-12 02:11:27 PM
First internet video I remember downloading was The Phantom Menace trailer, but mostly because I was at a friend's house and they had a computer that could actually play videos (yeah, we were still using a 486 in 1998 or whenever it was), took hours to download but everybody all huddled up to watch this trailer because this was back when the idea of downloading a trailer instead of waiting for it to appear on TV was completely new.

And the Numa Numa video is from December 2004? Again, I'd have thought that was going around in the 90s... not after the death of Napster (as a point of reference).

Wow, who remembers web rings?  Great idea, horrible in practice.  Half the sites in any given ring were dead, 90% of those that worked sucked.

Things that come bundled are hardly "viral," as that term is commonly used with regard to videos and ads.

That was 1995 according to wiki. I saw it a year later on a bootleg tape from a friend who got all the "for your consideration" tapes as part of his job, he was like a clearinghouse for "viral" stuff before the net was robust enough to really move that stuff around.

It was like a fire hose.

CSB: a friend had a component video out so we hooked up his computer to the TV during a party because he had a farkload of mp3s. Well towards the end of the night he decided to gather everyone up and he then played that video. I never saw a party clear out so fast in my life.
