Less from business, brands and media. Bullshiat.

I can open my phone now and I know that the first 10 posts will include 2 genuine ads, 3 brands that my friends have liked, 2 posts that my friends have made a comment on but that I don't like, and maybe someone posting a picture.

/yeah I don't know why I even open the app anymore

Should have done that yesterday.

Down almost 10% this morning, and plummeting.

Facebook has seen the writing on the wall- next to no one actively uses core Facebook anymore. Sure they passively use it (scroll through posts, maybe hit "like" here or there, etc.) but the dropoff in individual posts (statuses and picture postings) has been huge. Instagram is where everyone goes to share pictures and what they're doing (as well as Twitter / Snap / etc.), but they just can't seem to figure out how to extract the ad revenue out of Instagram. The thinking is if they can pretend that FB is less corporate, people will return, but No One Cares anymore. It's becoming the new MySpace/Friendster/etc.

Sorry FB, you had a good run, better than most. Stop hiring lest you're going to have to lay off a legion of otherwise unemployable mouth breathing trolls. Focus on Instagram and FB Messenger for the time being until you actually find something else with some growth.

Oh, and Sell, Mortimer, Sell!

I wouldn't mind seeing a fair amount of ads and sponsored content if it could actually show me everything my friends and the pages I follow posted, in chronological order. It really should be that simple...

Less targeted marketing and more recycled memes from Reddit.  Hurray...

I know that by not liking company/brand pages, I get fewer ads. Then I hide the others... using Brave browser. No fb app for me.

So I don't know why this would make people use fb less....maybe companies will use fb less, but good. They need to stop pretending to be people anyway.

Open the facebook app for the first time in a few days.

50 notifications.

Almost all of them are "Someone posted something!". The rest are "We are trying to drive you to an ad!"

Ok, and my Brother's Birthday. But I already knew I spaced that off. You know, if I wanted to just read my feed, I would just read my feed.

Ah but then how would they extract revenue from people to 'promote' their post to more of their followers.

With that said, I would pay good money for a service that works for ME instead of people who are trying to drive my attention and spending. Some service that would aggregate my communications, filter out the crap, and highlight the "Hey someone is trying to get a hold of you."

Doubleplus bonus points if it has an app that replaces the 50,000,000 communication apps on my phone with one that just frigging works.

Maybe they think they'll get more money from people who pay to promote their pages, rather than indirect ad revenue.

That said, it's probably too late. Everyone has their own FB habits now, which is to be mostly passive scrollers.

I have that. It's called email. Maybe it's not as flashy/shiny as the latest whateverthefark, but it's free(*), does everything you said, and it works with every device I have.

See, I want to see *more* from the companies I actually like.  REI is having a garage sale, This Bar is having that band, That Restaurant rolled out its winter menu.  But they can't pay FB every time something happens (well, OK, REI could probably afford it), so their posts get suppressed.

Facebook is going to pivot away from the people who are giving them billions of dollars to make it more like it was when it wasn't making any money?

I do believe they will say they are doing that and then go even darker on their funding and ad tech.

Email would work for me... except for the deluge of spam that is unending. Even using services like MX guard dog to screen out the most egregious crap. The number of places that have gotten my email once and seem to think I want to receive every sales ad grows geometrically.

I have filters. And filters of filters to screen that crap out. And still I have "200 new

Actually in this case I don't. Facebook won't send your posts to all your followers. The algorithm won't allow it. But, they will let you pay them money to show your post to more of your followers (but still not all).

Facebook is still the default (in my experience) place to look up a real-world friend or family member by name, almost like a modern phonebook. It's a good social network in that regard, so it's the first place I'd go if I wanted to send a message to my friend from college.

But, it's so far removed from what it was in 2004-2007 when it was college kids posting text statuses, updating relationship statuses, and sharing pictures from some party. That wasn't exactly a vital service they were providing, but it was addictive. Now, if I look at my newsfeed it's garbage from a million different commercial sources and one friend wishing another friend a happy birthday. At some point FB will wither and die if that's all they are.

Opacity: FB Messenger

I got pissed off at FB when they separated out private messages into a separate app that tries to take over the whole farking phone.

So I said, "I don't need this," and uninstalled the app.

But, I get notifications that I can only clear by installing the app. So my facebook icon always has a red number on it, which is bullshiat.

My domain's email is all handled by gmail, and they do a good job of blocking the random spam. But I've had good luck with unsubscribing from others who got an address through somewhat legit sources.

This...I'm on various FB groups and it's annoying how posts just get thrown together willy-nilly. I use a third party app on my phone which seems to sort everything by Most Recent, but it's a pita on the official app.

Yeah, you'd think they would at least let you save the sort order for "most recent" for a single farking sesison. I pretty much never use it now because of that. Open FB, realize that my feed is showing me stuff from months ago that people have clicked like for recently, click on "most recent", scroll, click on an item, read it and find out it was a sponsored ad in disguise, click back on feed, realize that my feed is showing me stuff from months ago that people have clicked like for recently, say GODDAMMITSOMUCH FACEBOOK WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU, click on "most recent", scroll, ... and so goes recursion.

Maybe it's a super sneaky test to see how often they can make you click on a button that obviously doesn't do anything.

Similar to the twitter reporting feature.

I have friends and family on mine but the main reason I use it is to follow authors and some companies. I want specific updates from them and I can't consistently get them. The only sure way to see post from the places/people I'm following is to go to their page and look. That is annoying. The news feed is worthless.

I want to see some news in my feed, but not to the extent that it's practically all I'm seeing. I've got Fark for that. Or hell, Twitter.
