I have seen 'Shut up' in almost every headline submitted regarding this. Never heard of this man and I don't follow hockey. Anyone care to explain? TIA.

One of the standard tropes for Fark hockey threads is to tell Pierre to shut up, because nobody likes listening to the guy.  I cannot say what it is about him that is so maddening.  One of the other tropes on this site is to say "Fark cancer!", especially in hockey playoff threads.

/Shut Up, Pierre!

I knew exactly what TFA was going to be about by the headline. I'm glad they caught it early and that he'll probably be around to yell at for quite awhile.

My personal favorite:

and the "fark cancer in the eye" guy meme but I don't have that saved and it didn't come up on GIS.

He's a poor attempt as a "sideline" reporter for NBC/NBCSN during their hockey coverage. Since it's hockey, he's stuck in a box between the two benches and has to talk loudly when they cut yo him. I personally don't understand the point of him being there, but NBC has persisted with this since they began broadcasting hockey.  There is a version of shut up ... in our soccer discussion threads, with the target being either Alexi Lalas or Dr. Joe Machnik on Fox's coverage for the same reasons.

Yeah, that Turco video cracks me up every time I see it. That one and Vigneault losing his shiat after Fiddler makes fun of Bieksa are the two videos I show to the uninitiated when trying to explain hockey culture.

Harley's explanation was great.  It's also important to realize that it isn't just the Fark Hockey Brigade who hates him:

From my perspective: everyone else in hockey broadcasting has been involved with the game on some level besides hockey broadcasting.  They've played, they've taught, they've coached.  They've been out there on the ice.  Pierre never has, but he wants to be part of that club so very bad.  The way he comes across is like that little yappy cartoon dog who's always jumping around the bigger dog: 'are we gonna do the thing?  Are we? Are we? Are we?'  Pierre just exudes being a wanna-be.  His statistical and player knowledge is 2nd to none, but he's completely unable to communicate that knowledge, a) at appropriate times and only at appropriate times, b) while respecting the personal space of whomever he's talking to, and c) without coming across as the too-eager high school kid who wants to impress the college seniors at the frat.

Apologies.  Pierre did play hockey in high school, college, was an extremely minor coach for the New Jersey Devils for less than a year, and was head coach of the early 90s-era Hartford Whalers for a bit less than a season, a stint which earned the on-the-record ire of literally every player on the team.  None of which qualifies as professionally successful.

You've got to go back a pretty good bit for 67 games to cover several NHL seasons, and most accounts, excepting Pierre's, describe that stint as unsuccessful.

People don't like him because he's obnoxious, even if he generally means well, and even if he does possess crazy hockey knowledge

Ever listen to Brian Engblom? The local beat writer refers to him as "Three-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman" which makes him look like a great player, thus a great analyst.

He's the hockey equivalent of Trent Dilfer.

People don't like him because he is A) nerdy and B) a know it all as he has some kind of savant like skill ...

^this.  No one cares that Ovechikin's mothers brothers cousin get's his car's oil changed next to the sub shop that Gretzky used to get lunch at....

No but between him and Doc, they actually know something about American players who haven't gone the Major Junior route in Canada.

Listen to a Canadian broadcast and all you hear about are the good farm boys from Sask. who played for MooseJaw or the London Knights. It's a bit homoerotic at times.
