The item is listed as costing £2.00 - a 20% discount from its usual price of £2.50. With a full head of cauliflower costing £1.00 in an M&S store, the cauliflower steak is four times more expensive than its more ordinary cousin - and that's at the discounted price.

The author is terrible at math.  It's more than 4x the price because the "steak" is only a fraction of a full cauliflower.

It's M&S.  They're worse than Whole Foods for ripping off customers.  Difference is that they are targeting middle class and nouveau riche rather than hipsters.  Even Waitrose is more restrained.

And in the sidebar:Marks & Spencer stops selling ridiculed 'cauliflower steak'

That was quick.

Reasonable Human: middle class

That's the British meaning of middle class, not the American meaning.

/there's a reason I picked the "upper middle class" section of the wiki page - that's what working class people mean when they say "middle class".  The other two sections are comprised of people who would contend "Hey - I work for a living!".

I'm a cheap bastard, so I get a whole head, chop it up, and bake it with garlic and parmesan. Sometimes I splurge at Costco and get a whole bag of pre-shredded cauliflower rice because I'm lazy.

I'd never lie and call it a steak. Maybe a slab.

It's funny to watch all of you denigrate this without any knowledge of how versatile cauliflower is.

Of all the superfoods we eat today, cauliflower has so many different ways of preparation that it boggles the mind. Chia seeds, kale, acai, and kefir are great, but they don't have the range of possibilities that cauliflower has.

So yeah, cauliflower steaks sound great. If you're a vegan, this is a fun way to eat with your stupid meat-eating friends who are filling their bodies with carcinogens while you fill yours with healthy macronutrients.

Compare that to the picture of that shred of cauliflower.

I was watching the Food Network one day, and on Valerie Bertinelli's show (who I did not recognize for the duration of the program) they made cauliflower steaks, and they looked good as food, but not as steak.

Also, I wish I could find a full head of cauliflower for the equivalent of £ 1

A Veganuary is where they bring dead vegans before they go off to the Vegantorium. They can't bury them because of course they sprout vegetables in the graveyard. Vegetables of the dead, which, if you eat, will make you a vegan zombie. Vegan zombies, of course, are quite useless as they just stumble about eating grass, and refuse our tasty, delicious brains.

I made a whole head of baked cauliflower recently. Cover the thing with a yogurt and spice marinade then put it in the oven for about an hour. Cut into wedges and serve. Delicious. You could probably do something similar with cheese and bacon.

I'd also be willing to try a cauliflower 'steak' but I don't need to buy a pre-wrapped one. I own a knife and know how to use it.
