iaazathot: FormlessOne: If the preliminary statistic for 2017 holds, it puts the city's homicide rate at 39.7 per 100,000 residents, Detroit's lowest rate in nearly four decades

Wow! Only 8.1 times the national average! WHOOOO!

I'm still not farking moving to Detroit.

That it is falling is good news. Considering how the GOP loves to blame it on the Dems and not to the auto industry bailing and the GOP governor and legislature screwing the state, it is welcome news. I am sure the GOP will do something to drive it back up in the near future.

It's good news because "Woo, political points"? Can't it just be good news because "Woo, less people are getting stabbed"?

You guys need new hobbies. And souls.

I was in downtown Detroit last week, and as a lifetime resident of the Detroit burbs, it's the first time I've really believed the hype that Detroit may be making a comeback. The place has hopping, new restaurants and little shops have popped up everywhere, Campus Martius was filled with ice skaters, people were walking around everywhere and there's actual condo construction going on  Downtown. It looked like an actual normal city. If the Downtown prosperity can spread to the neiborhoods, it just might happen this time.

Hell, Detroit's cleaned up a ton just since I started working here in the mid-90s. It's not done, but it'll get there.

What I find kind of cool is that some of the early scenes in Deadpool were filmed on Woodward Avenue in Detroit- when he's talking to Dupinder, look over Deadpool's shoulder and you see Joe Louis Arena, home at the time of the Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit was here before we were. It'll be here long after we are not.

NephilimNexus: If the preliminary statistic for 2017 holds, it puts the city's homicide rate at 39.7 per 100,000 residents

Miami in 2014 was 81 per 100,000 residents.  Which is to say, twice that of Detroit today.

Houston, as of last year, was 301 murders per 100,000 residents.  Which is to say, more than three times that of Detroit.

But hey, let's not let any inconvenient facts get in the way of your misconceptions.

With a population of 2.2 million that would be  over 6,600 murders.   The total for the year was 302 for all of Houston which is about 13 per 100,000.

Richard Saunders: That's nice'n all, but I'm more impressed by the 1979-2016 decrease in population. Holy sh*t. Knew things were spiraling downward for them, but wow.

My only experience with Detroit was flying in to buy a truck from a fella about 45 min. north of there. Retired Ford auto worker. Great guy with a wonderful family.

Sort of a common misconception.  Yeah the city itself dramatically shrunk, but everyone who could just moved to the suburbs - including the companies.  Fact is Metro Detroit is still like the 10th or 11th largest populated area in the country (right behind SF/Oakland and Boston).
