I know that district well from my time in Miami.  Demographics are definitely favoring Democrats there:  it's becoming less Cuban (traditionally a Republican demographic, although that's changing too), more Puerto Rican.  I mean you can still get good ropa vieja there, but you can literally hear the change by listening to the accents.

Do you know how hard it is to get a photo ID or license in Florida now?

My mother went to renew her license a few weeks ago, has had a Florida license since 1982.

Birth Certficate
Marriage license(father is dead, so semi easy)
Name Change certificate from when she got married(who the fark knows where that is from 50 years ago)
SS Card
2 pieces of official mail to prove residence(and it is at the discretion of the dickheads at the dmv)

They even said to bring in her expired passport so they could take a look at it.

Those Puerto Ricans are not going to have all that info, and ain't gonna have time to get it.

Both of you are right.

Let's see who is more correct. A lot will come down to grassroots "get people voter registration ready" and then "register them to vote"

The voting part, I'm not worried about because there's anger. It's the steps that lead up to a successful vote. Though Alabama gives me hope that if *those people* (Alabamans, what?) managed to get registered against very professional voter suppression...

I think that it's fairly obvious what is happening here. This congressional district has been gerrymandered to greatly favor the Democrats. This sort of thing is highly unamerican and I encourage all of you to contact your representative to express your concern about how such an obvious circumvention of the electorate could take place in this day and age.

Nahhh.  I am a realist.  Latinos are disorganized, good talkers, but when it comes down to it, it is a lotta bluster.

Latin Pride is wearing the flag of your island, country, bumper sticker on your car, reggaeton, men calling each other papi and chest bumping, and it pretty much ends there.  I say this as a latino.

My mother is white and had the majority of the documents, and they turned her down.  She literally had to call a cousin in Louisiana to go to the court house to look for her name change petition.  Even though, SS, passport, have had her married name for almost 50 years.

this will be the only way it can change. And they have to go through those GOP SoS to do it.
Those who voted D in Alabama have me quietly hopeful. I'll take a "blue dog" Dem who votes R at times over a pedophile bible thumping psychopath R any day. That is what we call progress these days.

Is there a residency requirement or can a carpetbagger come down there and run?  I wouldn't mind running as a Republican, getting that sweet, sweet republican cash and spending a little of it.  Be the darling of Fox News for the free advertising and then, if I win get on the Banking Subcommittee and flipping my pay into 63 million like that Corker fellow (citation required).  If I lose, transfer my war chest to a 5032-7c3pio CPAC Mask then to an offshore account and retire.

Harry Freakstorm: Is there a residency requirement or can a carpetbagger come down there and run?

There are no minimum residency requirements for federal offices.  The Constitution only specifies you have to be a resident of the state, not how long.  And SCOTUS has consistently ruled states cannot add requirements to federal offices.  In theory, you could sign a rental agreement 5 seconds before the polls opened and be a legal candidate for the election.  The chances of you succeeding in that scenario are essentially zero because you would be seen as a grandstanding asshole, but it does technically fall within the letter of the law.

phalamir: The Constitution only specifies you have to be a resident of the state, not how long.

No rental agreement needed.  Kansas has a senator who's too cheap to even buy a Potemkin $30k house in some small town... literally claims one of his donor's houses as his address for voting.
