Screw Grassley.

I guess this means Grassley will be the first 2018 target of left-wing character assassination.

That would require having good character to assassinate.

Chuck is an asshole who is so deep into the pockets of his donors that it's a wonder he can breath down there. But if you'd like to post a positive article about him I'll wait.

Suicide is different from assassination.  Grassley dug his own proverbial grave.

Actually with any luck Patrick J. Leahy, D-VT will become third in line with get ready for it Nancy Pelosi as second in line

So, by your point of view, people in the electric chair or given lethal injections are assassinated?

STDMan69: So in other words soon to be president

Only so much as Pence is also "soon to be president" as in "temporarily until they also get thrown out of office for Russia shenanigans".  It's a shame, Hatch looked poised to be where the bleeding stopped on the line of succession simply by not being part of the administration, campaign, or "investigation".  Grassley will easily get caught up in obstruction of justice or more generally in the entire conspiracy.

However, it does open the door for a possible President Mattis, which most people seem okay with.

How many times do people need to have it explianed?

Unless there is some catastrophic event killing the President, Vice President and the Speaker simultaneously there is absolutely no chance of the line of succession moving beyond that. None. Zero, Zip.

The timelines for impeaching the President and VP, will not possibly exactly match that for replacing the speaker. IF Ryan is guilty and is removed, he would be removed and replaced long before impeachment was complete.

If we start burning through the line of succession, it will stop with Paul Ryan.  We won't get to Grassley.

Can we just skip all these nefarious middling mofos and go straight to the Department of Agriculture's deputy undersecretary part-time assistant. She handle the job with dignity. Anyone but Trump.

A plausible scenario could be Mueller's report shows that both Trump and Pence did something that is impossible to ignore.  Impeachment hearing start in the House, Pence gets scared and resigns.  No V.P. nominated to replace him.  House impeaches and Senate convicts Trump.  Now President Ryan is in charge.  He'll nominate a V.P. and the Speaker of the House becomes 3rd in line.

It gets more interesting if it all happens after the 2018 elections and we go through the same steps above with Speaker Pelosi as 3rd in line.

I'd suspect that if Pence gets too deep (we learn that Flynn didn't lie to him) he would resign and let them appoint a new VP. If I were a betting man Kasich would be top on that list.

You're both right, but I was going on the premise that if it goes past Pence and into Congress, mass resignations quickly follow.  At this point I'd put money on an Agnew/Ford situation with Pence playing the role of Agnew and someone like Kasich or Romney playing Ford.

Outside of resignations, it doesn't appear as if impeachment would come in time for Ryan to even still be Speaker.  It's already not looking good for House Republicans in 2018 and if Mueller comes back with serious charges and impeachment is either started or imminent, there's almost no chance the Dems don't take the House and therefore get to hand pick the President-in-waiting, the Dem's affinity for losing near-sure-things notwithstanding.

The interesting thing there will be if Pelosi gets the nod as usual or they put up someone expecting them to clear out for the big chair and put Pelosi back in afterwards.  Just for the lulz, I'd want them to put up Hillary, but that would likely be the wrong move for the country, unless there's a large feeling of "Let's pretend we didn't elect the obvious criminal and instead made the sane choice last time around".

The president pro tempore of the Senate is third in line to be president.

Hatch isn't retiring until after the 2018 election. If control of the Senate shifts after the 2018 election, the next president pro tempore will be a Democrat, probably Patrick Leahy.

I say probably, because there is a tradition that the most senior member of the majority party is the president pro tempore, but it isn't enshrined in law. It is an elected position within the Senate, and crazy shiat can happen.

He probably has more to worry about from the RWNJ factions who would spoil his quiet drinking from the trough.

They are going to be horrible to him.

Then, of course, Fox News Kool-Aid drinkers will blame the Democrats for being so partisan.

Funny thing. I am just getting warmed up about how many fingers I can point at nasty people who will get involved in the latest shiat parade.  Left-wing character assassination concerns are way down the list.
