In Nixon's day, this would have caused an immediate national outcry, not just for impeachment but criminal charges

But today, no one will bat an eye

Tell me again how we deserve to keep our freedoms and constitution?

And this is why the constitution has an emoluments clause.  But it only matters if congress is willing to hold the president accountable, which it's not.

First it is birth certificates, now something about WTF is an "emoluments".
Just get back to work.

I thought a President wasn't even supposed to have business ventures. Or at least not run them himself.

Yes, entirely fictional narratives about the previous president being born in another country and therefore ineligible to be president, and contested claims about the current president potentially profiting off of his office in an unconstitutional manner are exactly the same and should be equated at all times.

Piss off.

Just more libby lib fake news. I'm just a regular guy and foreign countries often give me free land while rich people give me free money to build hotels all the time . Perfectly normal business practice. Suck it haters.

It's not selling out if you're for sale to begin with.

The only difference between the Trump GOP and the GOP of earlier generations is that they are no longer
ashamed of having a "For Rent" sign on the front door of the RNC these days.

This is why MOST Presidents divest themselves of these sorts of businesses and attachments BEFORE running for office. Not Donnie though. Get while the getting is good, and when the heat comes down, make a break for Dubai and let the Secret Service have to keep renting their rooms...

Give us a House dominated by Democrats and you'd see more outrage.  Not worth calling for charges when there is literally no mechanism to make that happen.  Raging impotently is what the Trump base wants us to do.  Waiting to serve up revenge as cold as the 9th layer of hell after the next set of elections is in our best interest.

Well, Trump said he was smart for not paying taxes, so profiting from the presidency and not paying taxes makes him a frigging genius.

What an emolument might look like:

Makes sense. Donnie was complaining about U.S. laws that prohibit businesses from engaging in bribery in foreign countries.

America knew Carter was a peanut farmer before they elected him. He still had to sell the peanut farm.

They will but they have to win this year. That means selling themselves to voters as sanity, not just Not Trump.

Doug Jones won because he was sane and Roy Moore is insane. He didn't point at Moore and say, "See? I'm not crazy like this bastard!" Jones instead appealed to people's desire for government to stay open, deposit benefits checks on time, and leave the world un-blown up.

Democrats in 2018: "Let's leave the world un-blown up."

It's grounds for impeachment as much as the Russia scandal and it's much easier to prove to rubes.  Talking about this would help to promote government officials who aren't looking to personally profit from their office.  Yes, I realize that would negate some Democrats from seeking higher office or even keeping their current seats and that's why they won't do it, but it should be in discussions NOW so that when election season rolls around in a few months it's on the minds of voters and then Democratic candidates don't have to mention it at all specifically, they can just speak to the talking point of responsible, limited-corruption government.

There, I've said it, and I'm a Democrat.

/I'd rent a billboard and buy airtime, but the GOP controlled Congress still wouldn't care.

AdmirableSnackbar: It's grounds for impeachment as much as the Russia scandal and it's much easier to prove to rubes.

"Proving" it requires articles be filed and passed by the House in the first place. To do this, Democrats need the majority but you are also stating to do this, they must run on a message of impeachment.

Essentially you're saying Democrats should take the focus off themselves, off their message, and off their appeal to voters and put the entire spotlight on the biggest spotlight hog of them all.

Does it stick out why this is a bad idea?

Democratic voters don't look for the same things as Republican voters.  Saying "We failed to impeach Trump 47 times in the last four years" won't work for them like it did for Republicans and Obamacare.

You're missing the point.  I'm talking about what Democrats should be doing RIGHT NOW to set up their message in the elections later this year.  I'm not saying this is the only thing they should be talking about and I'm not saying this alone should be their campaign strategy.  I'm just saying they should be talking about it now, raising the awareness for people who are not terribly politically active, so that when it comes time to run their campaigns they've ALREADY tarnished the Trump name and prepared the nation for impeachment.  That way they can just focus on their own individual and Party campaigns without having to mention Trump at all.

Narrowly avoiding a blatant power grab by Big Peanut. If we hadn't stopped History's Greatest Monster from passing his pro-legume agenda, we'd be staring at these on every streetcorner:

Go google "Checkers Speech".  Nixon certainly did get away with it, but it certainly left enough stink to make it harder to get out of Watergate.
/Agnew was the one who got busted
//probably for bribes as Maryland Governor or Balto County Executive
///otherwise would have been 38th president (instead of Ford)
