In other news, there is still no cure for male pattern baldness

$475,000 a treatment.  If anyone doubts that a future is coming to America where there will be no pretense of life-saving care for the have-nots, just look here.  That bill isn't sustainable for a random $12 an hour grocery checker.  Or their kids.  It's only going to be certain gold-plated executive plans that cover this, if those.  Don't have a half mil. cash to save your kid? Guess you'll just need to make a new one the old fashioned way.

 Death panels indeed.

You need to think about 'property' with more flexibility.

Eh. It's science. Trump will write an executive order banning it. Just like Bush did with stem cell research

Anyone else get "New Car Smell" out of that headline?

Oh, this is about cancer. Christ I'm an asshole.

I am a  neurologist who had to conduct daily mental status checks and neuro exams on everyone receiving car t cell therapy. It's all good until it starts making your brain swell, makes you completely encephalopathic or start to seize. Then we have to give anti IL agents (which may or may not destroy the efficacy of the treatment).

fark you, no.  Bush never did that.  He simply said federal funding couldn't be used to start new cell lines from aborted fetuses.  Compared to drumpf, that is...well, not even in the same universe.

These first gen CAR-T treatments are so expensive because doctors have to harvest your own cells, ship them to a lab, insert genes for the treatment, grow them in a lab, purify them, and then send them back to for implanting in you. It's a low yield, labor intensive process. The next generation will be to create a generic cell line with the treatment incorporated so they can be mass produced more cheaply. It's still a ways off but the fact we got a gen one of this to work is incredible. This is the equivalent of the first computers in the 60s. Room sized machines that only governments could afford. We all have more computing power in our phones now, it's just taken a while to get here. These cell therapy treatments are going to be the same. The first ones will be ridiculously expensive which each passing generation of therapies bringing the costs down. It's the same thing with biologics. The first biologics were extremely expensive. They're now getting to the same price levels of small molecules for some conditions.

You mean Pence? Trump just signs things that get put in front of him.

To paraphrase President Arnold Schwarzenegger from the Simpsons:

"I was elected to Lead, not to Read!"

/ok replied the lackey, here's the dome solution

So

1) Non-Immuno Therapy treatment

2) If 1 does not work, do Immuno-therapy

3) If 2 does not work or you do not do 2 you die

/but you might get messed up by immune therapy...sounds like a risk worth taking if you're up against death anyways

Here's one of the early looks at CAR T from back when it was an experimental treatment.

They re-purposed the HIV virus to insert a new DNA sequence into some of a patient's own white blood cells which are then reprogrammed to seek out and destroy their cancer.

Yup.  Things are very expensive at first when you're doing something brand spanking new.
