You gotta think positive. They got an EXTRA deduction this year.

Every year the hospital collects donations to shower the first baby born in the new year with gifts.
Matthew Cauthron, marketing director at Delano Regional Medical Center, said the twins will go home with more than $3,000 worth of baby supplies.

Oh that won't cause any fights later.

"You were born first, but I'm the one who got $3000 in supplies for mom and dad."

Believe me:  being the older one is VERY important to twins.

Yep.  December 29th birthday here.

What would have been impressive would have been if the kids had been born on this flight.

Kid A could have been born 1/1/18, they cross the date line and kid B is born 12/31/17. That would mean that the first born kid will be older in terms of consecutive minutes breathing but be younger based on the calendar. Could really fark with your mind.

"I was born first!"
"Not according to my driver's license."

Depending on how their school district does their grades...it could be very important.

Csb,

my birthdate of my birth certificate is fudged by two weeks so I would go to school a year earlier. Granted I wasn't born in this country and at the time this was a common enough thing. Of course then we ended up emigrating to the US before I was in school, with a different calendar, and the moving of the birthday was moot.

I guess my parents knew immediately they would want to get rid of me a year faster (also kids are expensive...or so I understand).

/on another note, I was a righty who wrote with my left hand, which would have been perfect in Iran since the written language is right to left...and then we come here and it sucks writing with your left hand.

If I ever had so much money to blow and the mother of my children would be game, if we had twins, I would love to rent a lifeflight type jet and do that with our theoretical kids.

Are you me? Happy birthday.

In addition to the crappy dual purpose gifts was the fact that kids parties were practically non-existent. Lived in Chicago so no outdoor parties and people didn't like traveling through snow, ice and sub-arctic temps. Everyone was busy with their families or traveling on Christmas vacation so no one was around. My folks threw me a couple "half-birthday" parties during the summer but it just didn't feel right.

Then again, maybe no one liked me and those were just excuses that my parents gave me. Excuse me while I go curl up into a ball and cry over my depressing childhood.

My nephew was born a on January 1st. His sister was born a few years later on January 27th. They're also part Jewish. So, December/January is Gift-a-palooza for them.

/And once they find out that my wife and I are Pagan and celebrate Yule, they'll want a piece of that action too

After a month immobile they arrived on time and healthy but I was sad to have missed the opportunity to have had different birth year twins.

Meh. I'd be more impressed if you could have done triplets. Kidding! Glad that everything (and everyone) came out safe.

Now let's get really freaky here. The date is February 28, 2020. Twin A is born at 11:59 PM. Twin B is born February 29, 2020 at 12:01 AM. Twin A will celebrate a birthday every year. Twin B can only legitimately celebrate every 4 years. That means that not only is twin B younger based on how long they've been breathing but that when twin A celebrates turning 20, twin B will only be turning 5. Twin A can legally get nooky in 2036, but until 2084 anyone getting with twin B is dating jailbait.

A paradox, a paradox, a most ingenious paradox.

Most age-category youth sports - soccer, tennis, baseball, hockey  etc.- use the calendar year to sort the kids by age for fair competition.  If these two lads get into sports they will not  be allowed to be in the same age level when, in the real world they would be on the same teams...  A logistics mess for parents driving kids to games and a disadvantage to the firstborn kid who will literally be the youngest kid in his division.  OTOH the second twin will be the oldest kid in his division....

Sorry to threadjack, but I've always wondered: are kids, who were conceived at the same time via infertility treatments, but due to some being frozen as embryos and then were implanted at a later time, still considered "twins", even if they are born years apart?  I have a son who was born in 2001 and a daughter who was born in 2008, and they were from the same "batch" of embryos who were conceived in 2001.  Are they twins?

I would say no; the saw for considering people to be twins isn't so much their genetic similarity as the fact
that they gestated at the same time.  Fraternal twins have no more genetic similarity than singleton
siblings (and indeed there are cases of fraternal twins having two different fathers).

Registration for school is based on calendar year. In our district kids must be 6 years of age by September 1 in order to enter first grade. So if you have one twin born August 31 and the next September 1 then, according to the district guidelines, they cannot start first grade in the same year. And what is the district to do? If they decide to waive the rule and allow them both in at the same time someone will gripe about how it's not fair that someone who was off by one day was allowed in. If they stick to the rules then the parent will complain about how it's not fair that Jimmy has to wait a year while his brother Johnny is going to school. If they tell the parents to wait a year until they are both eligible according to the rules then the parent will complain about how the "older" kid is being unfairly punished.

Pretty unusual for this to happen, although it's still pretty cool and odd. Neither side of my family are twin-prone. We have exactly one set of twins, they are my third Cousins*. This is looking at family history out to third Cousins and back three generations. I just peeked at Ancestrydotcom, probably more twins in the woodpile if I looked further back I would suspect.

*Our respective Grand Mothers were sisters. That's third Cousins, right?

Or the school board, sports administrators etc. could make an exception for twins, triplets ONLY.  Such births, within a few minutes of an arbitrary age boundary must be exceedingly rare so the exception would be equally rare and shouldn't raise the ire of the "what about meeeee?" parents...  But I'm expecting common sense from bottom-level bureaucrats so, my bad...
