Global Warming is cancelled.

For me Friday looks slightly worse.  +1 Thursday night, -2 Friday.
/fark this

2018-01-02 08:35:18 AM
(looks up my forecast)  It's -2 now, was -5 yesterday morning.  It's not predicted to get quite that cold again in the next 5 days.

It's sad when you check the weather for the next day, see that it's going to be in the 30s and are thankful that it's "warming up".  Of course it all goes to hell after that.
This is insane.  And I usually like cold weather.

Indeed.  Though, where I am, it could be (and has been) a lot worse.  For living in East Bumblefark, ME, it's still warmer than a lot of other places west of here at this latitude.

My sister and nephew live near Augusta.  So I know it could be worse.  Just checked their weather report - it's -2 right now.  Not including windchill - the temp is -2 (f).  brrr

High of 72, low of 53 on Thursday.  Not all unicorns and cotton candy however, we are expecting fog in the morning

-14 right now in central Illinois.
I've been using a propane torch to pre-warm the toilet seat.

It was -5 when I left for the airport this morning (west of Boston). To be honest, it didn't seem noticeably colder than yesterday afternoon (+15ish).

At some point it's just kind of *shrug*

Here in central VA, last winter was warm with it barely dropping below freezing. I think we have already had more days below freezing so far this time around. In fact, it has not gotten above freezing here for a couple of days.
I feel like such a wimp at times. When I was a teenager I lived in southern WI for several years, back then you didn't even worry about a hat until it dropped below 0 degrees. Now I put on a jacket to get the paper in the morning...

Anchorage got Chinooked last night. We woke up to 43 degrees.

Suck for you northerners I guess, it's 20 today, the rest of the week looks to slowly increase, reaching 63 Sunday.

It's supposed to get up to 20° tomorrow, which will be nice, as I'll be trudging around the house in two feet of snow using the snow rake before more snow comes in on Thursday.  So I have that going for me.

2018-01-02 09:52:47 AM
On Monday it is supposed to get up to 45, last year when we had a cold snap and then the temp go back up to the 40s it felt like beach weather.

It's 20 below normal here in St. Pete.  Average high for this time of year is in the low 70s, but the high for this week is in the low 50s.  Which I can confirm is super cold if you aren't used to it.

2018-01-02 09:55:23 AM
Temps here on the NC coast are supposed to be around freezing all week, with lows in the teens. Predictions of 2-6" of a snow and ice mix Wednesday into Thursday will pretty much shut everything down. Snow is whatever, but our winter storms are frequently over an inch of just ice accumulation, which is bad news for a lot of things. The temperature isn't so bad, but it's windy here all the time. Gusts of 15-20mph today makes it awful outside.

Hopefully the weather will not keep me at work. If roads start getting closed I'll have to stay and work until things clear up. The overtime would be nice, but we have shiatty cots, and I'm not trying to sleep in a room with the dozen people on my shift for 2 or 3 days.

I'm fine with it.  Last year it was too warm and so this summer there were hardly any peaches.  Low-price, high-quality peaches from July through August are a highlight of living in Georgia.  Those rock-hard ones from Cali don't cut it.

Our current forecast for Long Island Sound.

Issuing Office: New York City
Source: National.Weather.Service
3:56am EST, Tue Jan 2
... LOW WATER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST WEDNESDAY... ... SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON... ... FREEZING SPRAY ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST THIS MORNING... ... GALE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS ISSUED A GALE WATCH, WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT. * WINDS AND SEAS... WEST WINDS 15 TO 20 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 KT THIS MORNING. FOR THURSDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT, WEST WINDS 15 TO 25 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 KT. SEAS 2 TO 4 FEET. * FREEZING SPRAY... AREAS OF MODERATE FREEZING SPRAY ARE EXPECTED INTO THIS MORNING. * WATER LEVELS... 1.5 TO 2 FEET BELOW MEAN LOWER LOW WATER DURING TIMES OF LOW TIDES TODAY AND TONIGHT. * IMPACTS... LOW WATER CONDITIONS DURING LOW TIDE MAY LEAD TO NAVIGATION DIFFICULTY AND MAY REQUIRE EXTRA SLACK AND MOORING. FREEZING SPRAY WILL ADD WEIGHT TO VESSELS, CHANGING ITS CENTER OF MASS TO REDUCE STABILITY OF THE VESSEL. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A LOW WATER ADVISORY MEANS WATER LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW AVERAGE. MARINERS SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION AND TRANSIT AT THE SLOWEST SAFE NAVIGABLE SPEED TO MINIMIZE IMPACT. A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY MEANS THAT SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OR FREQUENT GUSTS OF 25 TO 33 KT AND/OR SEAS OF 5 FT OR HIGHER ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING... AND HAZARDOUS TO SMALL CRAFT. INEXPERIENCED MARINERS... ESPECIALLY THOSE OPERATING SMALLER VESSELS... SHOULD AVOID NAVIGATING IN THESE CONDITIONS. A FREEZING SPRAY ADVISORY MEANS THAT LIGHT TO MODERATE ACCUMULATION OF ICE IS EXPECTED ON VESSELS. OPERATING A VESSEL IN FREEZING SPRAY CAN BE HAZARDOUS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT VESSELS BE PREPARED TO TAKE APPROPRIATE COUNTER MEASURES BEFORE PUTTING TO SEA OR ENTER THE ADVISORY AREA. A GALE WATCH IS ISSUED WHEN THE RISK OF GALE FORCE WINDS OF 34 TO 47 KT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED... BUT THE SPECIFIC TIMING AND/OR LOCATION IS STILL UNCERTAIN. IT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL LEAD TIME FOR MARINERS WHO MAY WISH TO CONSIDER ALTERING THEIR PLANS. &&

I lived for 4 years in a place that regularly reached -20. You would think I'd be able to cakewalk through the -5 I have today. Nope. No matter how much time you spend in it, those temps are still ball destroyingly cold.

The only bright side is: it's probably downhill from here on out. I hate mild winters that linger into April. Rather have a proper winter that farks off at the end of February.

2018-01-02 10:05:21 AM
Apparently we broke a 90yo record low temp this morning (-7F).  Mrs RT was flying back in from a new years trip with some girlfriends...

...(5:15am phone rings) "My car won't start, you need to come get me..." "We pay for AAA for a reason..." (click).

She made it home eventually... mighty chilly in the house this morning too :-D

-8 when I got to work this morning. Fark this.

2018-01-02 10:06:38 AM
In Chicago, we are going to tie or break the record for most days without getting above 20 degrees. Which is really impressive given the really bad winters of the 70's and early 80s ( at least one of those years went 100 days without hitting 32 or something ) But those winters came with a buttload of snow; we've been pretty lucky on the shoveling aspect the last few years.

I blame global warming!  Seriously I do.

If you've ever been diving,  you've noticed the thermoclines... depths at which the temperature suddenly shifts.  These form because while two bodies of water that are close in temperature equalize, two bodies of water that are different enough won't mix.

These occur in the air too.  I've read that there is a boundary in Canada that normally keeps the arctic air locked in the north.  But with the north pole warming, the air temperatures in winter are too similar, so arctic air bleeds south making us miserable, and accelerating the warming of the pole in the process... a lose / lose situation.  Essentially we are leaving the fridge door open.

I'd consider that cold, and I live in New Hampshire.

I can't wait for the temps to top 20, so I can feel comfortable outside again.
