Wasn't bad math - someone entered the wrong ticket number range to be included in the drawing. Mundane detail

If you can't trust in the integrity of the lottery then you can't trust in anything.

What happens if someone from the previous drawing won? Oh well, too bad for you?

Our Gaming Division will be reviewing the policies and procedures put in place for this drawing, and will place heightened scrutiny on procedures for future drawings in order to ensure they are conducted appropriately.

Translation: Someone might have actually won, and we want to make sure that doesn't happen again, because money.

Donald Trump's Vagina: What happens if someone from the previous drawing won? Oh well, too bad for you?

I think they are honoring the winners from both drawings:

We encourage consumers to hold on to tickets they purchased for today's drawing as winning numbers from two drawings will be honored by the Connecticut Lottery.

Aka, the reverse South Carolina.

Snatch Bandergrip: What happened in SC?

They screwed up and printed far more winning tickets than they should have and basically said we're not paying.

Why are we seeing so many lottery screwups suddenly?  We went decades without a single headline of this sort, now they're monthly or more frequent.  How in Hell can one get worse at picking numbers out of a hat?

I'm pretty sure the lottery people were worried about Y2k, but they messed up and subtracted 18 years instead of 20, they thought they had 2 more years to deal with it.

What makes you think they are more frequent?  It could just be we're hearing about it more and it's harder to cover up?  Especially before the internet and 24/7 news cycle.   Also, in the past, you might hear about a rare screwup in your area, but now we're hearing about "rare" screwups in every state, every country which could make it seem like it's happening a lot more.

Not saying it definitely IS that, just a possibility though.

Is it that hard to require that such an important number entry be double checked by more than one person?  Heck, it would not be hard to write a short algorithm for the computer to notice the expected value of winnings is far higher than acceptable? The answer to both is no. Heck, do both. Each time. Every time.

It's likely I don't understand this type of lottery, but apparently some lottery tickets were excluded from the chance of winning. The actual awards for winning tickets drawn would have been completely as expected.

Why? I don't play the lottery because I math semi-decent, but this is part of a larger issue of faith in the State, and that's always bad when it takes a hit.

So what's this "Bad at math" thingey that keeps popping up? I mean, of COURSE you're not going to win, everyone knows that. But Subby, I say this out of the kindness of my own heart: if 2 dollars a week breaks your budget, you need a better budget.

I mean, 2 freaking dollars. Who cares?
