Some dipshiat fired off a couple rounds on the stoop at my apartment at about 2am.  Thought it was fireworks until I was shoveling snow around noon and found the brass.

I would doubt it.  Think of a pebble the same mass as the bullet falling through the air at terminal velocity.   I don't think it has the energy to penetrate a couple of layers of roofing material plus the sheathing.  I'd do the math, but I'm not interested enough.

It's okay, fate controls who dies.

Somebody most likely would have been hit had Sharp not moved the bed in the room from where the bullet landed, to a nearby wall mere days prior.
"I guess it was just meant for me to move it," she said.

So the question you have to ask yourself is how important it is that you live and from there it should be clear if a falling bullet will kill you or harmlessly pass through your roof in the middle of the night.

It's a popular event in the Philippines every NY. There are always some injuries/fatalities. When the monsoon came there were always a few leaks in the roofs to be patched. Most folks made sure they were under some sort of cover when the clock struck midnight.

Celebratory gunfire is very accurate, the bullets always come back down.

A falling bullet can penetrate a roof or skull, but not both.

Still, reckless and stupid to fire guns in the air randomly.

I don't think physics allows it.  Too much air resistance for a small mass falling at TV.

A quick cut for a 9mm bullet equals 244 ft/sec as TV.   That equates to a force of only 0.075N.  Not enough to penetrate wood.  It will make a dent though.

Back in 1970 my dad was visiting a friend in Guatemala. Muhammad Ali/ fought Ringo Bonevena one night while he was there, back when Ali's fights were an event unto themselves... after Ali won, the locals all started firing their guns in the air in celebration and dad suddenly had bullets whizzing over his head as he tried to sleep.

It really depends on the round. Regardless, don't shoot your gun randomly into the air and it's not a problem...

No, it really doesn't.  The mass just isn't big enough and the drag coefficient is too high to allow a bullet to generate enough force simply by falling.

Picture in the video shows the drywall paper going up into the hole.  I doubt the veracity of the story on several levels.

2018-01-02 04:38:43 PM
Doesn't all this penetration talk assume that the bullet was fired straight up, hit its highest peak, momentarily stopped and then fell downward? It probably didn't happen like that and the bullet had plenty of horizontal velocity.

That's assuming the bullet was fired directly up, came to a complete stop and reversed its direction. If you fire a bullet in a ballistic arc (which would cover most bullet's fired "up") they maintain significantly more of their muzzle trajectory, and tend not to tumble.

Weird, I'm almost positive I corrected "muzzle trajectory" to "muzzle velocity" (which is still not correct...should be "muzzle speed" in this case). Oh well.

Same.  Someone in my neighborhood fired off fifteen rounds of what sounded like 9mm, the there was a pause just long enough to reload and fifteen mire shots.  If I knew who had done it I would have called the cops, but I figured by the time they got there they would need something more than "some dude" over there to have any hope of catching him.  Lots of other people shot off fireworks.  Those do not sound the same.

People forget civil war and revolutionary war era bullets killed a lot of people and were a lot slower.  Even if your small caliber bullet slows down coming down, it is probably still traveling faster than a dueling pistol shot.

No, Louisiana of Asia.  Great food, also some horribly scary food, and we are trying to be nice to Alabama since a slim majority of them will draw the line at voting for a pedo.

Mythbusters tested this.  If fired straight up into the air, then yes safe.  If fired at a slight angle, the round retains a ballistic arc and is lethal.  You should watch the episode.  It is one of the ones with the cute red head.

Depends. If fired straight up, you'll only have minimal mass at terminal velocity. Might dent a shingle, or hurt like a biatch on your head, but won't penetrate either. But it needs to go *straight* up. You get a slight arc, and you can kill someone.
Easiest solution is don't fire your farking guns in the air.
I'll say this though, I was in Iraq in 04, and I guess they won some soccer game or something, because suddenly everyone was firing AKs into the air. Seeing all those tracers was actually kinda cool.

IF the bullet was fired directly up and returned on gravity alone terminal velocity would apply. This bullet was on a ballistic trajectory and would be going fast enough to be lethal.

You could probably measure the angle of the impacts and how it went through the roof and determine the origin from the type of round to within a 100 yards or so.
