The real world got more Fark-like. Paid shills and brainwashed losers spreading lies -- we've had that for years already.

I guess I am saying I agree with your assessment.

People are desperately looking for places to vent their frustrations online and not be worried of heavy-handed moderation of their side?

I've always found Fark to be a warm and supportive place. I can freely express myself and if I accidently misspell a word, put two spaces after a period or confuse loose and lose everyone just lets it go. I can state my political views and they are accepted as is. The only exception is never confuse Dr. Hugo Strange and Dr. Stephen Strange in the Geek tab - the fanboys will eat you alive.

Because Fark is less noisy than reddit and some of the bigger websites.

I'm finding it's hard to fight back against the noise on the internet these days with all the manufactured rage, at least on fark I know who the trolls are and can call them out.

I remember the good old days when the internet was young, and it was still a big moment to be able to communicate with someone else in the country that had your similar views.  In those days, there were newsgroups, or forums, or chat rooms, etc...

Things were a lot more civil. People who were interested in keeping Bonsai trees, or Ukranian egg decorating, or kite fighting, could find other people and talk about those things.

Then they invented social media.  And that turned everything upside down.  Because now every mundane and remote thought that enters someone's head is broadcast for the entire world to see.  And you get to see it whether you wanted it or not.

It was cute for a while.  Especially for us folks that wanted to see what people we knew in high school were up to - but didn't want to do it so badly that we would actually look them up.  MySpace and later Facebook allowed us to do that easily, and in the most stalking manner imaginable.  This was great until we remembered why we lost touch with those people to begin with.  Roughly half of those connections are either "Wow. I'm glad I'm not friends with that person today." or, "Gee it would be great to have sex with that person again, and hope my spouse doesn't find out."

Also...
Now we know for a fact that so much bad information, stupidity, fake news, bullshiat, and nonsense is clogging up our social media that many people can't even tell what is real any more.  So much to a point that it is directly responsible for electing the single most dangerous and irresponsible government this country has ever seen.  Good job, everyone.

There is no end game for final point to this post.  It's more of a rant.  But it does summarize how I see things.  And it's no wonder that people are becoming disillusioned to the whole thing.

Comeback?

It's Alexa ranking is down 1300 places from the beginning of 2017. It's around 1500th for US sites.

I'm curious about actual hit numbers, for which I need a premium account.  I've been here a long time and it seems a bit less trafficed, but nowhere near that kind of drop.  Looking at a quick list of top websites, a ton of them (especially the Chinese ones) weren't even in existence in 2009.  How much of this is other sites growing larger and Fark staying roughly the same?

/I'll stay here anyway.  The quality of discussion here is vastly higher than at other sites

It probably is because the younger crowd would rather get news from tweets than read some article like an old person.

Amusingly, they also aren't getting it from Facebook.  I do a college first-year seminar every year, and I asked my students where they get their news from these days.  They gave a bunch of answers ranging from decent (various news sites) to horrifying (Snapchat) and included Twitter but the one conspicuous omission was Facebook.  It's for old people now.

Reddit and twitter are too large and I find them difficult to nagivate to content I actually want. Then the user base is so large and sporadic that there don't seem to be actual conversations as much as just people choosing sides.

/it's rare, but I have been convinced to change my posistion a few times on fark, not so much on other sites.

Yeah, I started using Fark again because reddit has been a two-headed fanboy shiatshow since the 2016 election cycle started. The number of people there who feel their opinion is fact makes it feel like a psych hospital filled with patients roaming the halls with no medication.

At least we take our medication on Fark.
