No sad feelings here, Subby, but I guess you could leave the Christmas lights up until April or so if it makes you feel better. Seems to work for some people in my neck of the woods...

Well when you are a lifelong depressive, sad is the norm, not hardcore sad/depression/suicidal-but not a very happy soul, drown my sads in high grade weed and "low grade" music, punk and its many sub-genres (today was the awesome Naked Raygun,Jesus Lizarrd and Flipper...).

I don't understand this Christian bit of taking down the lights in the middle of winter. There's like three months atleast of darkness and gloom before the sun comes back. The daft tree will go but the lights, feasting and booze stay until I'm promised the sun will return!

I don't stave off the sad feelings, it's part of being an adult*; we do however prolong the inevitable by keeping the decorations up until Twelfth Night-ish, January 5th, or until the dog attempts to eat them.

/didn't want this to be my first day back at work
//didn't want to get out of bed this morning
///don't want to be here at my desk eating spam and cheese sandwiches** to save money

Instant Christmas without the needles.

2018-01-02 07:37:01 AM
I typically give people till the weekend containing (or just after) January 6 before I start getting annoyed. Three Kings Day and all that. I also don't start my annual Christmas game (go as long as you can without hearing Christmas music) until January 6 for the same reason.

Ahem. As cheesy as it sounds, when I get into the worst of it I start practicing random acts of kindness. I don't go out of my way looking for opportunities to do them; life will throw enough at you, if you keep your eyes open. But it's shocking just how much you can brighten someone's day with things that seem to be the tiniest gestures: buying another one of the thing that got stuck in the vending machine, helping pick up the big stack of books somebody dropped, things like that. And when you see the effect it has, some of it reflects back onto you. It's not a cure by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not some world-changing philosophical revolution, but I've found that it really helps.

I was going to say. Who takes stuff down before the 6th?  Why does Christmas everything seem to start before Halloween yet be over by New Years?

Christmas decorations go up the first weekend of December and come down the first weekend after Jan 6 in our house. Municipal tree collection is Jan 12 this year, which works well with that plan

Instant Christmas without the needles.

My neighbors put one of those in the yard this year. They left it on 24/7, which I thought was a little odd -- not like you could see the images during the day. It's still out there, but it's not running now. I don't know if they shut it off or it finally conked.

LED. probably cheaper to run it nonstop than it is to buy a timer. And depending where you are, the slight heat it gives off might keep it from being buried in snow during the day. Maybe

Meditate, put up some decorations that will work year-round and are just as sparkly/warm as holiday stuff.  Do Spring cleaning and garden prep.  Donate your excess treasures to a thrift shop or a homeless person.  (coats, blankets, etc.)  Do some yoga or take a walk.  All good stuff.

Leaving my decorations up until Epiphany this year, because I feel like it.

I will miss time off from work.  I love being off.

We took down our fake tree yesterday. Still have some lights and wreaths up though.

What really pisses me off is seeing Valentine's Day crap in the stores already. It's a shiatty minor holiday! We don't need a 1.5 month head start on buying that red, white, and pink shiat.

The holidays aren't over yet -- the SO and I are planning a 12th Night party this weekend. Candlelight, turkey dinner, mulled wine, potluck dessert, live music. Fark the winter blues.

Fu*k the typical SAD diagnosis. Been sunny here all day and cold AF. Take your Vitamin D and shove it. The only reason I have SAD is because of the goddamn temperature. The hell with sun.

Oh hell no, I am genuinely glad that crap is over. But then I also think I need to become a hermit, socialising stresses me out no end. And all that noise and color designed to basically sell you stuff is just sensory overload to me. If Christmas disappeared from the calendar entirely, I'd be thrilled.

Hey got to squeeze that in before Easter, which is early this year. That's what stores are about, any excuse to push a lot of shiatty crap.
