That's actually the reason for the aesthetic choice in the movie in the first place.

I mean, not that film specifically, but Darth Vader being based on movie samurai specifically and on eastern costume as known in contemporary US cinema culture in general.  Apparently someone remembered this when they were told that Kylo Ren's whole deal was that he was trying to crib Darth Vader's style and made sure the general principle was still applied during beefcake scenes.

The aesthetic of the original Star Wars' villains being initially based on a weird mix of archaic Japanese and Chinese styles (because the original idea was to make a Buck Rogers film and that was Ming the Merciless' visual shorthand) and then Lucas panicking and running rapidly in random directions in the second movie because he'd belatedly realized the unfortunate implications is one of the reasons the feel is really... distinctive.  All of the author saving throws messing with the visual style actually ended up with something pretty unique.

Incidentally, I'm gunna see TLJ tomorrow. I kind of wanted to see it on Saturday, but it seems to be out of either of the two local cinemas I want to see it at.

I mean, it's showing at Cineworld today, FFS, but... WTF? Why is a cinema open on New Year's Day? Why would I want to make an underpaid c*nt work today?

On the other hand, tomorrow's also a holiday in Scotland, so I'm still going to be making an underpaid c*nt work.

I'm bummed about cargo shorts being so uncool. Also, my 66 year old dad got new jean shorts for Christmas. I don't know how to tell him...

To be fair, New Year's Day is probably the least family/friend oriented major holiday. If you have to work a major holiday, NYD is a solid choice.

It's kind of different in Scotland. We kind of regard Xmas as for the weans, and Hogmanay for the grownups. So the bairns have their holiday, then we get ours.

Within living memory, Scots used to get their festive presents in a pillow sack at the end of their bed on NYD.

While you are likely right about the reason for that aesthetic choice, the high waisted trouser was very typical of european/western male clothing right up to the near end of the 20th century, and certain forms of formal wear retain it still, the tuxedo being the classic example.
European military uniform styles, especially cavalry, retain the high waist even today in their dress and mess uniforms, and this style was common in field uniforms even for infantry, as late as the Korean conflict. Do a GIS for images of Napoleonic wars era uniforms for instance, or check out any of the Youtube videos of Trooping the Colors for the Queen's birthday, or Bastille day parades in France.

I'm not sure I'd classify those as high waisted pants.  They're pants that have their waistband ... and here's a revolutionary idea ... at their actual waistline ... unlike all these pants for women these days that have a "waistband" down around their hips.  I, for one, really wish they'd start making pants for women like that again, as I really don't like this style we've been stuck with for the past decade or so.  To me, they feel like my pants are slipping down.  Plus, I don't think it's a very attractive look on anyone carrying a bit of extra weight.
