... it isn't a fissure.  Nothing "opened up".   It's a mild area of lower activity.  It's only dark by contrast.  If you were a thousand miles away from only a section of that darkest area, it would still blind you.  There would be a cooking smell.  It would tan you, tan you all the way down to the bone.

Where's the Bad Astronomer when we sorely need him?
