There's only one creature that knows everything that's going on, watches everyone who walks by, and judges it all.

I'm convinced that whatever the octopus evolves into, it'll be the next dominant species after humans.

Which Farker had the winning CSB about communing with octopi (and their children)? I can remember some of the phrasing, but not having much luck searching so far.

Ah! Oakenraven is worshiped by an entire clan of octopi.
(I remember seeing it mentioned in the NotNewsletter.)

Itll be more of us apes again. Unless an ele, its turtles apes all the way down.

Damn, dirty apes.

But I dunno, I imagine eventually you could see ape/octopus both achieving higher level brains.

The wars would be epic.

Or maybe an alliance, and together ape and octopus populate the stars?

And somewhere in there eventually, if not seeded all throught, more wars.

And an octopus in space battle will look at his humanoid comrads and scream "Its a trap". Completely unironically.

So you don't watch television then?

Tele - Greek - to or at a distance.
Vision - Latin - the faculty or state of being able to see.

I really feel squicky when people eat octopus. The octopus is one of the most intelligent non-human species. I want to elevate this distant cousin.

Please love the octopus :c

My late cousin Audrey's husband Jack gave me one-word career advise when I was young. "Oceanography."
Did I listen? No; I went on to bang the neighbor's flirtatious, seductive wife.

At least they missed the octopodes who got all Bedazzled instead of going for frills. They are super rare.

Second declension. It is as wrong to say "octopi" as it is to say "hippopotamapodes."

The main thing getting in the way of octopus dominance is their life cycle. They breed once and die, and there's no direct intergenerational social contact.

So, no matter how brilliant a given octopus might be, it has to start from scratch learning everything, and can't pass on what it learned to the next generation. That's a huge limitation, and it would take a very complicated evolutionary path to change it. They are specialized to produce enormous numbers of offspring, only a few of which will survive to adulthood. Parental care is pretty much limited to guarding the eggs until they hatch, after which mom dies of exhaustion and starvation.

That's pretty much the opposite of the way humans handle reproduction, which is how we get the social transmission of knowledge, which is an absolute requirement for technological civilization.

Octopodes: oct-top-o-dees

Just in case any of you were wondering how to pronounce it.

And I agree, they're wicked smart and will probably take over Earth a million years after we die out.

It's not uncommon to have Greek and Latin smooshed together to make a word. The difference is that for "octopus" the -"pus" is actually pos, podis, the Greek for foot. I'm became Latinized into "-pus" because reasons. This is why "podes" is the correct form; it shows the Greek roots of the word.
