Oh, FFS. The Phoenix saga is 40 farking years old. They're never going to get it right on the screen, because they've done almost no groundwork for the classic story, so they're going to instead do some stupid-ass reworking of it to fit it into the half-ass movies that already exist. They can't use the Skrulls, as that IP's owned by Marvel & Fox right now, and Jessica Chastain's already indicated that she's playing some alien shapeshifter instead of Lilandra, so it sounds like they've probably tossed the classic plotline.

Which means that it's going to kill the X-Men franchise, honestly, because farking this story up is like watching Tom Cruise fark up "The Mummy" - that movie was so bad it essentially ended Universal's plans to create their own cinematic universe of movie monsters, precisely because they shoehorned too many disparate, classic, well-known elements into a story that made little farking sense.

Goddamned train wreck is what this is going to be, sadly.

Just in time for the entire thing to be rebooted as part of Phase Four of the MCU.

Wow. I can't believe no one thought to try that before now.

Just do it like X3 and add in a few extra major plot lines.  Then nobody will notice how bad the Dark Phoenix part of the story really is.

I know, right! That sounds awesome!

I hope there's a pivotal scene where she and Rogue realize their mothers both have the same name. That would be cinematic gold!

Sophie, hon, I read the Dark Phoenix sage back in the day before you were even a glint in your father's eyes. I know what the story is about. Maybe you should try reading it. While you're at it, get the producer, the director, and the script writers to read it too. Get back to me when that's done.

2017-12-30 11:21:44 PM
You don't do this with a new person re-establishing the Jean Grey character.  Between X3 and this, at least comic readers can feel good about being the only people who ever care about this storyline

2017-12-30 11:24:29 PM
I'll watch it on Blu-Ray. This whole deal with rebooting the X-Men franchise with each movie has robbed me of any interest in the story, because in the end it doesn't matter. They'll just do something different next movie that makes any character development or consequences absolutely meaningless because it'll be a slightly different timeline to fit the director's ideas.

FormlessOne: They're never going to get it right on the screen

I can think of one way.  What If #27 (sold it on ebay years ago, so forgive me if I slightly mis-remember).

Dark Phoenix goes against the rest of the X-Men.  Petey does a "fast-ball special" and she turns Wolverine around in mid-air while turning Colossus back to flesh, so Logan guts him.  Nightcrawler gets tossed into helfire to get roasted alive.  The whole thing is gruesome, but everyone dies, including Havoc, Cyclops, even Gwen Stacy (Invisible Girl).  That would be the way to play this out on-screen.  Kill them all and let Dark Phoenix eat every world, and Galactus, too.

Nice to know they are going to nosedive it so bad that Disney/ Marvel can simply ignore the whole mess.

2017-12-30 11:32:31 PM
"Oh, and we'll set the whole movie IN PHOENIX, AZ! But only at night! DARK PHOENIX, get it? And then, since we have the dark covered, we'll do the gritty by just making everyone constantly dirty, like the shower hasn't been invented. And whenever we need the plot to move, we'll just have someone do something completely out of character or have smart characters misunderstand something and start fighting without talking!"

"Brilliant, here's 100million to get started"

As long as they spend three fourths of the movie on an origin story, it cannot fail.

The reason Logan worked so well was b/c Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart were almost playing themselves. They'd been doing this shiat for almost 20 years, that's where the weariness, the pain, the frustration, the personal connection, all that stuff came through. Great movie.

This might actually fit the bill if Sophie Turner's looking for an empowerment narrative

They need Squirrel Girl for Infinity War. How else will they defeat Thanos?

I liked First Class. Days of Future Past had some issues, but I could overlook them. Apocalypse was terrible and made me not care about the franchise. Zero investment in the characters, except to say that I'm sick of Magneto being torn.
Honestly, let the X-Men be for a while. Let Marvel reboot them in a few years after they've dug the well dry on what they've got now.

This.

I mean, stop saying that the Phoenix is a "level 5 mutant" inside of Jean Grey or whatever BS these movies say it is.  PHOENIX ISN'T A MUTANT....

/gets a bit stabby when stuff like that happens in movies

doglover: Squirrel Girl movie would be better

No it wouldn't. Squirrel Girl's entire thing is that all the "important" action is done off-camera. You can make a good comic out of that, and they have, many times. But it doesn't add up to a good movie: a well-done Squirrel Girl movie is doomed to suck. And if they screw up the formula to avoid that fate, then they've screwed it all up, so it will still suck.

I guess they might be able to get away with Squirrel Girl's very first story, when they were still figuring it out and actually showed the battle with Doctor Doom. That might work. But because it was the only story where they did that, there's no sequel potential, so bo studio will touch it.

My thoughts, if you care:

1. I like Sophie Turner. However, this was a bad role for her, and she's not the right person for the role. It's only going to end up hurting her to do this movie, and hurting the X-Men franchise to have her in the role. She's a fair enough actor, but she really doesn't have the maturity and gravitas needed to play Jean Grey at this stage in her life. What's more, they laid no groundwork, so she's being thrown into it and expected to bring  that gravitas into a role we don't even recognize her for. It's going to be a disaster.

2. With the exception of Logan (which might as well be a standalone movie) and Deadpool (which completely ignored the rest of the Singer X-Men universe and substituted their own version), every single X-Men movie has been a bit of an insult to fans of the comics, and I can't imagine the animated series fans were too pleased, either. Singer mixes up characters, tosses out important details, criss-crosses origins, rewrites relationships, and generally pisses on the source material whenever it means he can get a cool scene out of it. All one needs to do is look at Singer's version of Colossus versus the one in Deadpool, and you see what the Singer movies did as habit: They half-assed it and fudged their way through it so they could get to the scene with Wolverine or Quicksilver. The rest almost didn't matter to them.

3. Put 1&2 together, and you get this: Dark Phoenix will be the END of the Fox X-Men movies. They'll squeeze out their insulting-looking New Mutants jump-scare movie, I'm sure, but they won't be making another one before the deal is done with Disney, and Disney will take one look at all the garbage Fox made and say: REBOOT. Singer's X-Men will be wiped out, and the version of the X-Men we got a glimpse of in Deadpool will be the starting point for the MCU X-Men.
