No, we have not even begun to asshole.

Of course not. There is always room for more.
Also, this must be applied to every asshole along the way..

Nonrenewable resources are either inherently limited on Earth, or can be consumed faster than they are replenished. By this definition, many minerals and biological specimens are nonrenewable. Renewable resources are replenished at a rate as fast or faster than they are consumed. By this definition, assholes are a renewable resource

This place is capable of asshole the likes of which we can't yet imagine.  I feel like the last two years were just warming us up so we don't all collectively seize when facing the horrors that await in 2018.

No we haven't, and we never will. Human nature is kind of a thing.

By the time every currently-living person has died and the oldest person in the world is someone who was born on or after 28 Dec 2017, people will still be wondering if we have yet reached Peak Asshole. The answer will still be No.

Is the asshole still president? Yes? Is he still being enabled by other assholes? Yes? Then the peak of Mt. Asshole is far out of reach.

This.

I've been reading articles stating that we have absolutely hit "peak oil" since the Carter administration. We're not making any new oil anytime in the near future, but we're pumping  out assholes faster than ever.

/ and we all know how painful that can be

Short answer? No.

Long answer? I just sat through "Sausage Party," an unmitigated, pointless romp of naked candor, only to discover that this useless bit of movie has an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes because many critics thought it was a thought-provoking discussion of taboos, ranging from religion to sex.

If we've come to the point where that dreck is considered "thought-provoking," then, no, we're nowhere near "peak asshole." There's an entire crowd of mental enfants terrible out there, just as stupid and shallow as they are convinced of their righteousness, and that combination should terrify the fark out of anyone.

I mean, I just watched an animated bagel ass-fark an animated lavash, only to discover that 4 out of 5 critics found it "thought-provoking."

We're in deep trouble.

I guess that depends on who or what  is really making up your mind.

Parents, advertising, propaganda, education, social media, an unhealthy love of Malthusianism, or maybe you just don't like somebody.

to me it was juvenile escapism. Saw it in the theatre when it came out the orgy scene was more of an eye-roll to me than a shock. I have seen worse shlock produced than that.

I was more disgusted when critics mentioned the snuff-like film the Serbian film could show the societal breakdown symbolism of the Slavic wars in the 90's

if your definition of "peak asshole" includes people who use "begs the question" erroneously when what they really mean to say is "raises the question", then yes. yes, we have reached peak asshole.

concentration camps don't start out as the dreaded "fema camps". They start out as the "fusion centers" that immigrants are "detained" in.

same thing. just not as massive as it could be. so far.

"Don't ever challenge WORSE."

Not yet, but we're close.  The same lead-poisoned Boomers who caused a huge spike in violent crime in the 70s are now old, retired, and paranoid.  They are the GOP's base, and they are literally brain damaged.  But they have the numbers, they have the time, and they have all the money.  They're also going to keep kicking for another 20 years or so.

If America can make it to about 2040 or so, things are looking up.  But that is one very long scream.

The only question is how long will we enable assholes.  None of these would be a problem if people didn't tolerate assholes, especially maintaining employment for profitable assholes.  We can only hope the "no assholes employed" rule will get a big push.

Exactly, though - the movie is one big eye-roll. No shock value, just candor for candor's sake. Incoherent, internally inconsistent, nearly goddamned unwatchable - and I'm a "Kentucky Fried Movie" fan - yet rated as though it was this generation's "Meet Joe Black" or "Donnie Darko". Incomprehensible to me.

But, that's because folks mistake style for substance now. It's why we (still) have Kardashians. It's why we're excited about tweets. It's why Trump's in office. It's why "Ow! My Balls!" is on every goddamned channel, whether it's "Ridiculousness" on MTV or "When Animals Attack" on the goddamned Nature Channel. When patter beats reason, what in the hell's the point?

I'll go with the consensus, an easy no.

* 2016, the year of celebrity death, in hindsight, was tame, lame, such is the transitory nature of fame
* 2017, the year of the elevated asshole and assholishness
* 2018 seems as though it could be a teensy bit apocalyptic to me

/why yes, I *am* minimising the impact of the last two by using populist language, I'm shiatting myself thinking about Brexit alone
