Peter did a great job casting strong female actors, even Liv. I hope the women who were messed with come out well in the future.

Since when is Ashley Judd's career "ruined"?

She started off farking Wesley Crusher; there's nowhere to go but up from there.

I've heard of both of them, and I am not much of a movie buff. They've both had pretty fair careers, haven't they?

Any asshole can sometimes do something that will "affect your career." It's not just the Harvey Weinsteins of the world.

She's certainly made a good living, but you have to wonder (but can never prove or disprove) if these kinds kept her from reaching a higher ceiling.  She has 2 Golden Globe nominations (though 1 is a miniseries and 1 a musical/comedy), but Harvey could have easily made it extra hard for her to get into any true Oscar bait movies.  And IMDB still has her "one movie" on the search page as Double Jeopardy from way back in 1999.

Fark headline is hyperbolic junk.

// The only specific in TFA is "it cost [Sorvino] a role in 'The Lord of the Rings.'"

So in addition to an editor, we can add a set a set of balls to the list of things Peter Jackson could use.

She was already an Oscar winner in '97.
Side note: Mimic was produced by Harvey Weinstein's brother, who save for a claim about making advances on one woman via email, has been relatively skeleton free.

It stalled out after a decade alternating between trying to recreate the success of Kiss The Girls and taking every romantic comedy that Sandra Bullock turned down.

Jackson hating dealing with the Weinsteins and Miramax let to him taking the series to New Line instead, so I'm not sure what you mean by this.

Of course I actually read the article, so that might be the source of the confusion.

The reply from the company is pretty pathetic.

I agree somewhat with Weinstein: both Sorvino and Judd have ruined my trousers in the past.

2017-12-15 06:43:16 PM
Was he seriously planning on casting either of them? Galadriel, Arwen and Eowyn are the only notable female roles in LOTR, with Rosie Cotton as an honorable mention (and Shelob, if you're desperate). I'm not doubting the story, and I'm sure Weinstein cost them a lot of other roles with the "She's a nightmare to work with" shtick, but when the article says it cost Sorvino an LOTR role I'm less sure. I can't imagine who she would have played.

Ashley Judd was rewarded with a nude sex scene with Salma Hayek, so I'm not so sure Weinstein was really upset with her...

I for one, kinda read it but not really, if you know what I mean. I'm a Farker, after all.
So, as I understand it, Molester Weinstein had a list of people he didn't want for the LOTR and on that list was Sorvino and Judd.

Ok, so what makes Sorvino or anyone else think they would have gotten a part in LOTR? They were on a list of people not to use, not a guaranteed role. Pretty shiatty that it happened, but they weren't a sure thing, as I understand it.

You might be missing a bigger picture here. Neither of them had much of a career past the early 00s, despite both being talented enough to have very prolific movie careers. Now we know the who, how, and why as to their careers being sabotaged.

It's not whether they would have gotten a role in that particular film, it's the corroboration that Harvey Weinstein used his influence to try and harm the careers of women who he had harassed and threatened.

jaytkay:

Uhh, what?  That's some serious reading impairment, there.

The headline: "Peter Jackson says the Weinstein brothers warned him away from casting both Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd in the Lord of the Rings franchise - both of whom have claimed Weinstein destroyed their careers after spurning his advances "

This headline basically makes three assertions in two clauses:
1) Peter Jackson says the was warned against hiring two actresses.
2 a) Sorvino has claimed Weinstein destroyed her career
2 b) Judd has claimed Weinstein destroyed her career

FTFA:
"I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998," he said.
"At the time, we had no reason to question what these guys were telling us - but in hindsight, I realize that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing."

Assertion 1 from headline: Check

"Sorvino has previously said she suspected the movie mogul smeared her good name"

Assertion 2a from headline: Check

TFA also references the article Judd wrote in 2015, in which she initially made her allegation.

Assertion 2b from headline: Check

Explain what part of the headline was hyperbolic?

Perhaps you meant to say that Sorvino and Judd's claims were hyperbolic?  That's not what you said, so you're already wrong.  Furthermore, the facts as stated in the article are lending credence to their claims, so you're getting close to being wrong about what you apparently "meant", too.

She grew up in Kentucky, where UK basketball is the most popular sports team in the state. How's that any different than celebrities crowding the court side at Laker games just to be seen? At least she's not a bandwagon fan.

Arguably, that's their job and most NBA players are grown men, and I'd think a decent number of UK players are probably sophomores and juniors? At a certain point it's unseemly for grown ass people to be so involved in essentially children's sports. Grown men following HS football for instance.

Yes, I get that. Point taken. And, not saying you're wrong, but in this particular, specific case, it's not about a 'woman expressing strong opinions.'
I've worked with Sorvino, seen her on the set, dealt with her one-on-one. She's a nutball.

And it was still entirely wrong of Weinstein to blackmail her and derail her career for not sleeping with him.

So a woman, a black man, and a white man all exhibit similar behavior. But it's only ok when the white man does it.

Humans in the U.S. are adults at 18. Basketball players can be drafted at 18, but football needs college and a good combine performance. Which is the children's game? Neither. You are projecting.
