In Soviet Arabia, movie theater drives in to you!

Seems risky.

Wouldn't niqab/burqa's restrict vision?

What next they will allow women to hold political office and (gasp) not be forced into marriage?!

2017-12-11 09:22:11 AM
Wow, that's pretty progressive.  We don't even allow movie theatres to drive.

Still can be beheaded for saying you don't believe in God. Yay progress!

Great.  Last time Salman eased social constraints on women, he rounded up the anyone he deemed a threat to his popularity and either ransomed or killed them.

So don't cheer it.  Nothing beneficent comes from Salman.  He is as vicious and power hungry as Stalin in his 40s.

shiats about to get real in the Middle East.

A movie theater drives to a drive in theater.  Is your mind blown?  Mine is but it's a pretty low bar in here.

That would be a great movie to pair with "Dogma" in a double feature.

Remember folks, these are people Trump wants to side with in the ME, despite Saudi Arabia also being the home of 15 of 19 of the 9/11 hijackers, not to mention Wahhabism and its more than a few ties to ISIS.  And of course, it's a straight up monarchy.  They don't even pretend to hold elections.

I watched "A Madea Christmas" for the hell of it (I'm a big MST3K and bad movie junkie). It was pretty racist. You know it's bad when Larry the Cable Guy is cast as the progressive-minded father-in-law.

Hell, they've been our most awesome bestest buddies in the ME for decades.  Pretty much every administration Dem or GOP has been willing to kiss their ass and avoid criticizing their abysmal human rights records for that sweet, sweet crude.

And with friends like that....

Apparently, they're merely required to wear an abaya.

Sexy.

...While all versions of Islam suggest a woman should dress modestly, often covering her hair and body, Saudi Arabia is one of the only Muslim-majority countries that legally imposes a dress code (Iran is another). Women, foreign and local, must wear an abaya (a few get away with long coats) in public places. Muslim-often equated with Saudi-women are said to have to wear a headscarf; foreigners needn't. The face need not be covered, much to the chagrin of some hardliners...  -Source

Can someone explain to me why the 15 out of 19 is some sort of clue as to why said country is bad?

It was a separate group, started by two men, one of whom was Saudi, and thus he recruited from his country. It doesn't mean that we should cut ties, if anything that would make it worse.

These things are connected. Saudi Arabia is able to keep their extremists under control because they keep their religious elements comfortably quiet... Until God needs a little help to move justice along.

Because we cast total anarchy down on two countries while ignoring the elephant in the room. Look, if you're going to destroy the functioning government of two sovereign nations, maybe you should ask why SA wasn't included on that list, given that many, many parts of their government have strong anti-Western views in comparison to pre-War Iraq, which was one of the most cosmopolitan and progressive Middle Eastern countries.

You're kidding, right ? Saudi Arabia is the most prolific sponsor of international Islamist terrorism in the world and the world's largest source of funds and promoter of Salafist jihadism, the ideological basis of terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda, Taliban and Daesh/ISIS.
Not to mention that there is some evidence linking Saudi government officials to the 9/11 attacks. Allegedly, because Saudi threats canceled any attempts to hold Saudi royals, banks or charities responsible in court.

The Saudis are wary because they know the destructive path they're travelling down. It's well known that once you allow movie theaters, you must allow movie critics, and once the critics get their hands on movies, then you have movie reviews. Once you have movie reviews, you have movie opinions. Once you have movie opinions, you have movie arguments, for instance, about whether Han shot first or whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Then you have movie sectarianism with the accompanying bloody internet chat room wars. Then one sect becomes too powerful and it destabilizes the entire region. Then all hell breaks loose - movies referencing other movies referencing themselves, sequel upon sequel upon prequel, shaky cam independent movies, studio movies shot to look like shaky cam independent movies, product placement, hipsters ironically liking bad movies, hipsters ironically hating good movies, found footage, lost footage, merchandising, crossovers, docudramas, dramadocus, Nicholas Freaking Cage, cats and dogs living together, MASS HYSTERIA, ARMAGEDDON!

So they've started the ball rolling; it's only a matter of time before the end of the world as we know it.
