Hard to see how he's wrecked the league when the new PA pushed for the rookie salary cap, which devalues every player's contract except for the top 5% and makes veterans even more replaceable than they ever had been; the players keep behaving in ways that hurt the league's profitability, such as beating women and children; and Goodell, not the players, was the one who was able to solicit millions in "donations" from the military in exchange for a five-minute National Anthem.

He hasn't. He just takes the blame for all the things that go wrong, especially here on Fark where most of the people don't know shiat about football. The most popular threads are pro wrestling threads, that's all you really need to know.

He didn't create CTE, it was discovered while he was commish...somehow it's his fault football is bad for your brain.

He certainly didn't tell football players to beat women and children...yet it's somehow his fault that the criminal justice system doesn't punish them so he HAS to (he must do something about Ray Rice!!!!!) punish them BUT we don't like he way he punishes them.

But but but deflate gate! Bountygate! Oh you mean those times the commissioner exercised the power given to him BY THE PLAYERS to punish conduct detrimental to the game like, say, lying about cheating and a bounty program? Yeah that's his fault too, those poor innocent teams that broke the rules and then lied to cover it up.

Ratings are dropping, also his fault that the players decided this was the year racial inequity deserved a protest and caused them to start hemmoraging viewers.

Basically Goodell is Obama for people who never really liked football and are celebrating the inevitable demise. He gets all the blame from people who don't know any better.

Owners want a new CBA in place over the next two years so they just juiced up their man to get it done. Goodell destroyed the nflpa in the last round of negotiations and got the owners everything they wanted

This time the owners want more stadium credits (before the revenue split) and a longer season.

Players want more authority in the appeals process for player discipline, more medical benefits tied to cpe, legal Marijuana, and a different way to handle Thursday night games through additional bye week or schedule changes

Prediction : players will get nothing and be happy they still have jobs.

In what other corporation does the owner pay themselves equivalent to all their employees salaries combined while still owning the entire multi billion dollar corporation???

The rookie salary cap or the JaMarcus Russell rule was meant to stop paying unproven rookies millions of dollars in guaranteed money while veterans felt they were getting cheated

All it turned into was wage deflation as owners just replaced players faster.

The NFLPA should fight for doubling the rookie minimum if they care about players but that will never happen as current players only care about what's infront of them.

Wow, where to begin?
Did the league create CTE under him? No, but they sure as hell have gone to every length under his leadership and direction to disconnect any and all evidence linking football and CTE so as not to taint their profits.

Did he cause players to beat their wives and children? No, but his lack of enforcement(or haphaazzard for sure) of the player code of conduct has ensured they still collect millions while continuing to get involved in criminal activities.

And the ratings drop? Ya,nothing to do with protests and more to do with the absolute shiat product that is out on the field, mostly because everything has to be monetized for the leagues benefit.

White Knight Goddell all you want. History will show his leadership is the focal point of the downturn of the NFL.

As per your own comment, existing players should in fact have a desire to get that rookie maximum raised, since it will keep them from getting cut in favor of a high performing rookie who is only able to earn that rookie maximum.

Came here to say this.   He's just the punching bag so that the fans don't get mad at the owners and he's probably worth every penny for that.   All the fans hate his guts no matter what he does and it stops the flashlight from being shined on the real cockroaches of the NFL.

Exactly ? This idiot, Who better to protect the owners ?  We all know and hate him and ignore the fact that his is only a mouthpiece for ownership and since we all hate him none of us bother the actual owners with issues.

The commissioner has no real power outside of what the owners allow him to have, and tell ginger hammer is the perfect tool.

If Roger Goodell was making the NFL lose money, more people would want a new commissioner than just, who, Jerruh?

2017-12-07 11:29:34 AM
If he's the mouthpiece, then let's hate on the real commissioner, the one who was almost "fired" last month, Jerrah.  He's the one who pushed for reduced revenue sharing as far back as 2005, he's the one who pushed for only big-market teams (re: his team) on national TV every week no matter the division races, he's the one who pushed for Thursday Night Football, reduced rookie cap resulting in constant player turnover, 2 teams in LA, and a team in Toronto and London.  The CTE thing, that's all 32 owners, but everything else can be pointed to him.

Do they still broadcast the MNF game on the local ABC affiliate in the markets of the teams that are playing? They used to do that for the folks who didn't have cable, but I haven't checked in a while. I guess I'll see if the game is on Channel 5 here in Boston next Monday night.

Just a quick "told ya" drive by. I think it's funny anyone thought he would not be renewed, particularly right now. Likeable? No. But he's very good at his job and I'm not sure who would do it better. The thing is most NFL fans don't understand just what his job is. His job is not to "run" the NFL. His job is to represent the owners and let the public throw rotten tomatoes at him so they don't have to do it themselves.

When you are sitting around hating Roger Goodell - who is definitely an abrasive asshole - just realize that the owners, as a collective group, are a bunch of assholes themselves. Goodell doesn't take a dump without a consensus. They disagree with one another on occasion but at the end of the day Goodell only does what he's told. And he can't save the NFL long term in its current format because no one can - right now the owners are voting for as little change as possible so they can get it while the getting is good. The next TV deal the NFL signs will be the first time they have ever signed for less money than the last time and there's nothing on earth that will stop that from happening.

He's actually pretty bad at his job. TV revenue is locked in for another decade though, so it all amounts to nothing. The league has gotten nothing but black eyes from scandals and moronic decisions on the NFLs part. That's mostly on him since he has pretty much unilateral power to overrule people in the NFL with the sole exception of player punishment (and even then he has significant leeway to do as he will).

Again, if this were true, he'd have more enemies than just Jerry Jones and he wouldn't be getting a new contract.

It only took a couple of owners to overthrow Fay Vincent as MLB commissioner. Jerry wouldn't need many allies to get Roger tossed.

Roger, you just signed a $40 million a year contract. Do you really have time to post here on Fark?

Week to week viewership is down (as is broadcast TV in general thanks to cord cutters), but the Super Bowl is increasing in viewership year to year.

Your charts showed that revenue and player salaries have plateaued during his run as his own salary skyrocketed.

wjllope: sephjnr: London Rams Jags Browns team with poor attendance confirmed?

Mexico City would work though.

A single team south of the border would be good. Two would be better.

A single team in the UK will die a painful death. Four would be an opportunity.
