This kind of thing was going on everywhere on the planet. The Residential Schools in Canada, often run by The RC Church, gathered up nearly all the first nations children across the country for generations with the idea of "better educating them" (in an exclusively Colonial English/French/Latin education while trying everything to extinguish every aspect of their native culture) Abuse, physical and sexual was very common.

Damn.

I mean, I know the whole Catholic Church story, but this is the first I heard a story where the the child was blamed and, well, literally physically broken.

There was an inquiry here a few years ago, that I'll spare you the details of, but it was bad. Bad enough that even Steven Harper felt the need to make a formal apology (although he neglected to include Newfoundland & Labrador schools (it's complicated.Trudeau made *that* apology last week.)

i know a Dr. who was raised in a church orphanage in Italy. the children were treated harshly and molestation was commonplace. it would break my heart, the stories he told.

Is the Metro really on the most forefront of this reporting? Yikes. They do a decent job when called for I guess.

Isn't the Catholic Church position like that children are responsible for their actions starting at age 7 or something?

So who's to say the little hussy here didn't have it coming?

Funny thing is, I never hear of this kind of abuse being carried out in the name of institutional atheism.

If a Supreme Court justice wants to write me up for "hostility toward religion," let me know and I'll spell my name real slowly.

Those places were run like 19th century insane asylums, which were also horrific.
People were abused, burned, mutilated... and if they died - oh well.

Imagine the two idiots from Les Miserables, demanding coin to get the child medicine/food/clothes, then pocketing the money and using the child as slave labor.  If the child dies, they ask for more money, then before anyone can arrive they announce the child passed away from the illness.  Reputation preserved!

Most of the people being given to these places were the 'unwanted.'  So half the point was keeping them out of the public eye.  If the people died, it was not the end of the world to the people who put them there.  The system in place was shockingly cold and cruel, to my understanding.

Well the alternative name for the catholic church is the Pedophile Protection Society so is this really a surprise??

While we are on the subject of pedophiles, has the catholic church taken a stand on Roy Moore? I assume they would strongly endorse, for obvious reasons, but I was wondering what the official answer is.

Religion has ruined the human race.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money!"

Slavery as well most likely, if the treatment of the Canadian natives is anything like what they did to the Australian and Pacific Island natives.

Look at the Irish Laundries, they were slaves, doing work that paid into the church but they weren't paid.

Nearly all of the population is concentrated not too far from the American boarder. Most of those people go to secular schools, although there is a parallel funded Catholic system in most, if not all Provinces. That nasty business is baked in before Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms and through the misguided graces of the "not withstanding" clause, still exist. The residential schools were different. In the most gracious definition, the idea was to gather the far flung kids from first nation communities too small to otherwise merit a school, and get them educated. In practice, the kids were meat. Beaten regularly if they ever spoke their native tongue, Raped, cause Nuns don't put out, and let die with near zero effort if the ever got sick. And SO MANY even more horrific stories.
