blender61: do you live in a "right to work" state?

"Right to work" means you can't be forced to join a union to get a job, "At will employment" is what you were going for

Mandatory maxiumum paranoia for secrecy and security would have employees strip, walk through a checkpoint, and dress in scrubs for the workspace. Maybe a little more than just scrubs, to allow for sweats or foundation garments, as the employee prefers. This would get around issues with leaving residues on surfaces or arguments over the temperature dial. Apart from the naked security checkpoint, there's close to this level of dress control in the semiconductor industry.

I've personally heard "right to work" used by an employer (my former employer) to mean "you can be fired at any time." The interesting thing is that WA is not a "right to work" state so there wasn't even a reason for the person to bring up the term, they completely misunderstood what they were saying. I was also in an industry that isn't unionized, to my knowledge.

If you're feeling generous, you could pretend the two concepts mean the same thing because if you're not part of a union you're definitely not getting union protection from being fired.

As a lawyer myself, when my wife gets a legal concept wrong, I too give a long winded, eye glazing lecture on it, and about 5 other legal concepts at the same time.

It's all in the fine print we sign when we become lawyers that we do this to our spouses. We could lose our double secret super secret lawyer license if we don't.

I saw a hilarious subversion on The Gates, of all the damn shows. FBI agent is yelling at a local cop, "Why is it taking so long to crack the encryption! You assured me that you could do this." "It takes time to decrypt this, the password must be very complex." Password cracking screen is your typical Matrix-y thing with alphanumerics flipping by too fast to see.

FBI agent leaves the room, the cop immediately clears the screen and enters the real password, deletes the files that would incriminate her, and then drops back to the Matrix screen.

/I bet that's what Apple does when the FBI makes it unlock a phone.

The article unthinkingly puts burkas and miniskirts in the same plane, and states they are products of patriarchal societies. I think this statement requires more examination. Even assuming it to be true, it brings up a major question of why one patriarchal society would cover women and another uncover them. Second, the miniskirt was born during a period where women started gaining a meaningful hold on the workplace and had a chance to live a life not dependent on men. It could be seen as a tool of women taking control of their own sexual power.

Some of these things can also be said about the burka, particularly in Western societies where wearing it is optional. The question is how optional it is, much like the miniskirt.

/Incidentally, ties suck and either the author hasn't worn a tie or wore it so loosely they would be fired from many places that require ties

Well, there they require you to wear a "bunny suit" (not really a bunny suit) before stepping into the clean room.  They last thing they want you to do is work naked, and the bunny suit probably meets the requirements of modesty for just about every religion that has such, except I suppose for those that object to women wearing pants.  The clothing you wear underneath the bunny suit is your own business, though I suppose it could get awfully hot if you don't strip down to your underwear first.

I mean, NASA requires you to wear a space suit during an EVA, this is really just a low-budget version of that.
