Don't just adopt a dog because it's Christmas. Please, only adopt one if you plan to love and care for it. Research breeds, or if you are adopting a mutt, please be familiar with any health issues presented (if known).

Please, this.  Nothing is worse than getting a dog, or cat, for Christmas before you know it will bond with your family, and January is depressing enough without rescue centers getting a massive influx of dogs/cats that were just an impulse to satisfy your child for a week.

Don't shop - adopt and rescue.  When you adopt an animal, do it for life, or don't do it.

My wife is a groomer. Every year she likes to make a christmas card from her doggy clients to their owners.  Every client/owner loves this and it makes for interesting gifts back from them (usually in the form of liquid refreshments!)
This year she set up an old trunk and decorations. All of the the +/- 200 clients managed to keep the santa hats on for the photos. This is Maggie, the Westie.

You missed out on the black Friday dog specials at the SPCAs and adoption centers.  Got this good boy for $25 two years ago (5-6 years old), normally would have been $125+ adopted.

Dammit.  Bert* hated snow.  You're bringing back all my memories.

Of course, he sorta liked it when we'd encounter pee in the snow. Then he'd sniff at it with interest.

I can't find the original of this pic on my computer, but here he is.

He was an awesome dog. But then, dogs are awesome.  If you think he looks disapproving in this photo, you nailed it. If I knew how to strip out the MS time and date, this would be a great meme for "are you kidding me?"

Looks like I just stopped at the "Christmas" word in the headline and just posted an unrelated, non-adoption photo.
Apologies.
OTOH, through my wife's business, we have rehomed several of her clients, including one of our own, to people who have been in need. So there's that.
Have a great Woofday!

One of the big bonuses of Adopting, other than saving a life, is generally speaking the anima has been spuetered...is up to date on shots, been tested for all the nasties etc. And at the better rescues/shelters, they will already have a handle on personality as well.

And consider adopting an older animal. Puppies are sweet, but they can be work. Older dogs pretty much know the ropes. Not that you might not have to remind them of their manners. Then again, I could say that about some adults I know!

I wish our lease didn't specify two cats,  or I'd be hunting down a third black cat to hand with my boys.  At the same time, I wonder if, after over a year together *at 2 years and 1 year), they'd be like "WTF is this?" and  am glad my hands are tied.

I understand. Raising a dog from a pup gives you a lot more freedom to mold that dog towards your lifestyle. I adopted a puppy for the same reasons 6 months ago. Best of both worlds in my mind. I do understand the need for older dogs to be rescued, but sometimes it just doesn't work out due to ingrained behaviors/tendencies.

He is just over a year, recent got a new ring....    a neuter ring, and is in our rescue, if you were in the Philly area, perhaps maybe heard of a husky who was outlawed or banned in Maryland, whose story went viral last week (his name is Jack), he is also part of our rescue. We have some young pups in need of homes, and a few older pups who would like to lick your face and warm your toes. Not sure if I can pimp the rescue, so to not break any rules let me say we are in the Delaware Valley area, we have a site and we are a husky rescue mainly. PS- this dude loves belly rubs...

My dog came out of a box in a Walmart parking lot at 4 weeks old. I've had him over 7 years, and he is the best part of my life. I can't wait until we move and can get him a sister, unfortunately he only tolerates puppies, so I'm going to have to go through training all over again. Dogs are a gift, and we will never be good enough for them.

Slightly different adoption definition. Logan was my wife's dog of 8 years when we started dating - and he very quickly "adopted" me as his dad. We just said goodbye to him on Friday. I was only his for 5 years, but it felt like we'd been together forever. We're sad he never got one last snowstorm to enjoy.

Found this one at work. I work in a rougher part of town. Heavy chain around his neck (someone had a collar that we swapped out). Bite marks on his nose. Large belly full of worms, coated in mud, and he had been eating bark. Dog had a thousand yard stare.
img.fark.netView Full Size
img.fark.netView Full Size

Local deputies are pretty sure he was a bait dog for fighting dogs,  someone had unclipped him and he escaped.
Gave him a bath in the shop sink, split a philly cheese steak with him. then he started following me around so I took him to the vet. Vet saw the chain collar and told me he was my dog if I wanted, so we took him home.

Took a few weeks before he started acting like a regular puppy and had real issues being on a leash initially.

img.fark.netView Full Size

But he got better.
