I wonder if his appendix is racist too.

An appendectomy in 2017 is as routine as pulling wisdom teeth.  Unless it bursts, it's a ten minute laparoscopic procedure.  If it bursts, your gut fills with feces and yeah, that's bad.

Got my appendix removed at the height of the blizzard of 1996.

The pain was really bad.  Made it to AI DuPont children's hospital and they didn't even bother finishing the bloodwork they initially took on me before I was rolled into surgery.  Right before surgery began I heard another kid just screaming and crying and I heard a doctor shout "oh my god, shut that stupid kid up" and it struck my 11-year-old self as being really funny.  I asked the doctors if they could keep my appendix in a jar so I could see it and lied and said they'd try.  I counted backward to 10 to 8 and I was out.    Recovery was awesome because I got my own SNES and a bunch of games but I was out of there in about 24 hours.

This is what Home Depot is for. There is a point where your friend has to take an honest look in the mirror and say, "Am I a rugged individualist or not?" If the answer to that question isn't "yes and I am willing to take out my own appendix with a putty trowel" that person needs to stop all the complaining. Common sense people. Grow a pair, etc.

What a coincidence, my friend got his done for only $36, to pay for anesthetic and gauze and other hospital knick knacks.

I was all too happy to chip in for him.

not out of pocket. that's what the hospital bill was. then the insurance company knocks it down to I dunno 12k? and my friend pays the max, which for her is pretty damn low because my company has ridiculously good insurance.

it's still farking ridiculous though

Yes, he can.  He was never a hack, but it took him a while to find his place, and he's got a long while left.  At present, I think he's taking Jerry Garcia's place, which may or may not elevate him in anyone's opinion, but he continues to kill it.

If you haven't read on the escalating-bills-war of medicine vs insurance, it's interesting.
insurance companies think they should get discounts for group rates because they have so many customers going to participating care facilities. Care facilities basically say, "sure, you can have a discount (giggle)" and then raise prices so the discount means nothing. The insurance company says "sorry we only cover $X for that" and the hospital raises rates again and says "listen, that $X is only 50%. You can't do that. You should at least pay 75%" and the insurance company says "okay". so prices get inflated again, in ridiculous ways. I'm drunk, so memory on the exact way this works may be a little foggy.
Anyway, this really sucks for people without insurance, because a lot of them just don't know they can usually call the hospital billing departments and say "hey guys, you charged me $150 for 3 aspirins. I assume the rest of the care was similarly inflated. can we cut some kind of a deal?" and the hospital usually will have a separate super secret service scale for uninsured/hardship people.
So lots of people don't know to do that, and their bills get picked up by nasty aggressive debt collection agencies. The agencies say "yo, hospital, you're going to take a 100% loss on that account. How about we buy that person's debt from you for 5% of what it's worth?" and the hospital says "5% on something we've inflated 30x seems fair, let's do it!"
Then you have an agency demanding 100% of the debt plus fines. The agency knows you don't want to pay and all you have to do is wait them out. It's a gamble for them. A certain amount of people pay 100% on a slow payment plan, but many pay 0%. You can actually say to the debt collection agency "you guys are bugging the shiat out of me. I don't like you. If I pay you 10%, will you leave me alone?" and the agency will usually say something like "holy crap, you're willing to pay something? I'll tell you what, you pay us 20% by cashier's check or money order within 30 days and we'll settle out. Otherwise we'll keep bugging you for the full 100%."
So no, things don't really cost $36,000. And there are a couple ways to pay far less. Money is a game. You just have to learn the rules.
My wife had awful credit when I met her, which she thought she was hiding from me by always changing the subject when it came to money. Eventually she came clean, and within a year or two we got her credit up to about 800. Her credit might actually be higher than mine now, but that's only because a few big purchases had me listed as primary to help get her numbers higher. She likes buying stuff, and sometimes I have to cover the bills :(   One step at a time.
I want to say I don't understand how money works, because I really don't. But I apparently understand how greed and numbers work pretty well. Thinking like a butthole is a good way to wrap your mind around it.

See, this is why healthcare in America is so expensive. Losers wait until the last second and use the emergency room to deal with something that should have been scheduled weeks in advance and performed as an outpatient service at a local grocery store fast care clinic for about $80.

Yup;  he's been in the Jerry slot with original members Bob weir (rhythm) and Mickey and Billy (the two drummers), and Oteil Burbridge on bass and Jeff Chimenti on piano/keys.  I've only seen them play live once but i've heard dozens of shows.  Mayer has really aced Jerry's tone and playing style, but also steps out on his own.  He's not a terribly innovative player, but he can cover a lot of styles.  I'd say his technique is pretty flawless, but I don't hear a ton of originality.

it's almost like "spot the influence", to what i said about covering styles.  and i don't mean to sound disparage-y, he's an absolute motherfarker of a player.  get well john, hope to see you again sometime!

I had two rounds of ESWL (kidney stone shock wave surgery) and each was just shy of $30k (before insurance).  I learned my insurance is pretty damned good...only about $3,500 out of pocket

Yep, the cost is about right. If it wasn't for my insurance, I have no idea what I would have done. I think I paid about $2500 out of pocket for the same tratment as what you got which was about $25K or so (luckily, I had just one treatment...followed by a week of agonizing pain while the shards passed through me).

I thought the first tour was awesome, maybe because it was novel and fresh, but i don't hear the same magic in this second tour, even though they are likely way more polished now.  I think Mayer is part of the problem.  He not trying to do the 'Jerry' thing any more.... which i suppose is both good and bad at the same time.... It just doesn't sound like the Dead to me, anymore... but the first tour did.

Agreed...after the fare thee well shows it seemed somewhat disingenuous to go out without the other ones (no pun) I did go see them first tour and it was good. Mayer has the licks down but it seemed stiff and forced at points. Now they are nothing more than a sad nostolgia act I watched some of the most recent stuff on youtube and its not even close IMHO. Bobby is fading fast. Dementia maybe/
