I saw a snowy owl once. It was on top of a Kroger store sign in Lansing Michigan.

Saw one just today that had wandered down to central Iowa.  What the hell it was doing there, I have no idea.  But it looked badass, that's for sure.

Not sure why this got the creepy tag. Snowy owls, and owls in general are cool.

...Saw one of these once when I was stationed in Oscoda, MI, many years ago - the thing was so big it actually made a swooooooooosh as it went by, and it was low - maybe about ten or twelve feet off the ground.

I see them every year in southeast MI. They like the banana dykes.

I assumed the headline was because the Oscoda HS Owls were winning the state championships this year...

Dammit I was going to make a Hedwig joke but someone beat me to it.  Well played.

Scientists, until fairly recently, believed that snowy owl migrations were driven by hunger and scarce resources in the Arctic, a southern quest for food. While that can be a factor in some years, it's usually the converse that's true. Research shows snowy owl irruptions in places like the Great Lakes are instead driven by a very successful summer, full of an abundance of food.

Interesting, but do they mean an abundance of food in the Arctic or in Michigan?  Makes sense to preserve food over the winter for next year.  But why would a good year in the Arctic push all the owls towards a particular area in the south?
