Wow.

2017-12-01 11:04:03 AM
That says more about the quality of those buildings and the fire response, really. An old downtown near here had a similar problem and the fire inspectors couldn't blame anyone with all the problems they found.

Quaint is fine until you have a problem.

I think the lesson is "don't use a burn barrel during heavy winds".  But the forging thing is a good lesson too.

Somehow I don't think you're going to be able to forge a blade over any fire you could contain in a metal barrel. For one, if the fire is hot enough to forge steel over it's going to soften the barrel too. Two, good luck actually getting it that hot with all the heat lost through the highly conductive sheet metal. You need refractory brick and so on.

"We often tell people we don't allow open burns in the city and they often say, 'What's the worst that could happen?'" Morse said. "Well, this open burn just caused millions of dollars of damage and destroyed half our downtown."

Fair enough.

My dad used to burn yard waste every year, downed branches and shiat...even though our yard backed up to a wooded area that nobody seemed to own (or at least, that nobody cared about). Why aren't we just putting the branches over the fence? Shut up and drag them over here so I can burn them.

He wasn't supposed to burn leaves but he always snuck some into the barrel. It was puzzling to me at the time, but now I think dad just liked burning shiat.

Let's not pass judgement until we determine his facial hair scheme.

If it is elaborate, we can tell he was serious and he should go to jail; if hairless we can just consider it a bonehead hold my beer moment, move on while he is in jail.

I forge steel.  You are correct.  Trying to do it in a burn barrel would be futile.  Letting the fire get out of control is epically stupid.

When will local news outlets realize that it's a world-wide web, and not everybody knows where Cahoes is. I assumed it was in Europe as I started reading.

But I get it...This whole Interwebs thing is a new fad they are just learning about.

Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.

Quaint is fine until you have a problem.

probably the bigger issue. Gotta find somebody to blame for all the lack of bothering to fix stuff...
FTA: Assistant Police Chief Tom Ross classified the fire as unintentional, or "reckless arson."
Guy had a fire contained in a barrel, which is normally pretty safe. wind took over and knocked it down. I'm not going to call that reckless, i'm going to call that wind damage. But since that charge is a class E felony, putting it on him is probably a way to get him to admit fault for something lesser, take the blame for everybody's sins, and make him the sacrificial lamb on the altar to insurance.

2017-12-01 11:52:54 AM
The fire was allegedly started by John A. Gomes, a 51-year-old city man who was using a burn barrel to imitate something he allegedly saw on a television show about forging steel.

Mayor Shawn Morse said Gomes was trying to bend metal in an apparent attempt to mimic the History Channel television series "Forged in Fire" about bladesmithing.

Nice word choice. We would also have accepted "ape," as it conveys exactly how much business this moron had doing something like this.

There are obvious limitations to backyard smithing. eBay now offers safe and effective forges. They're expensive but so is burning down half your town. I would encourage curious would be smiths to get one.

Maybe. But as we now know, you are not responsible for anything you cause, up to and including death, if you're too stupid to understand what you're doing. hopefully this guy has a history of drug abuse, felonies, and illegal immigration to really get him off the hook...
