Flashback to Anchorage, AK, in 1992:

Mt. Spurr had erupted, coating Anchorage with dust, ash, and glass. All of the health authorities warned against people driving, as it would kick the volcanic debris off the ground and into the air, where it would endanger the health of people with respiratory disorders. They advised people to wait until street-sweepers and other cleaning methods could be employed to collect debris or wash it into the drainage system where it wouldn't affect air quality.

The GOP Mayor, aptly named "Fink," upon learning that cleaning the streets would entail paying overtime to municipal workers, issued an advisory of his own: He implored Anchorage residents to get in their cars and drive as much as possible in order to blow the debris from the streets.

I had a subscription for a few years, and bought from the stand later on when I wanted.  I soured some when I began to see reprints of the same articles (including the one pictured, with the same pictures), but I loved the recurring gag of aliens backing presidential candidates.

I had my subscription forwarded to me when I worked at a summer camp.  In the mornings, everybody was rounded up for announcements.  We'd read news, talk about the day's activities, and then they'd beckon me from a rocking chair on a lodge's porch to come down and read a selected piece from the WWN.  The older kids liked the gag, the little kids would be discussing the "news" as fact for the rest of the day.

God bless you, Weekly World News, we hardly knew ye.
