Already have the 12" one that came with the cushy blanket.

I'm pretty sure Lucas was way ahead of the game on that long before Disney owned the property (merch is where he made all his dough).

Exactly.  BB-8 made a killing for them the other year.  An adorable "little brother" to R2-D2?  That's GOLD.  Now we've got this little furball-penguin-tarsier looking thing.  They know what they're doing.  And as long as it doesn't become the centerpiece and overwhelm the story, it'll be a license to print money and not annoy everyone.

Soon we'll learn all about their history, the planet they come from, their social structure (which will be like meerkats, only 100x more adorable), and people will drink it until their bank accounts are empty.

And that's just it. As long as they're around for a bit of comic relief - but don't stretch the suspension of disbelief like the Ewoks did in Jedi - they could be perfectly harmless fun. And if they help my four-year-old get a bit more interested in the franchise, but it's still a story that the rest of my family can enjoy, all the better.

Back in September there where whole shelves of the things at places selling Star Wars merchandise at Disney World. I knew then this was going to be a huge merchandising thing for them- a new alien character that appears to just be a little pet-type sidekick with stuffed toys being on sale months before release? Yeah.

Porgs are the new Ewoks, but hopefully aren't as tiresome.

Fans have already decided they're going to love the latest Star Wars movie no matter how it turns out, just like they did for the Prequels many years ago. Whether they buy the merchandise now or later doesn't really make a difference.

It bothers me when it spoils plot points.

I used to enjoy looking at the LEGO catalogs that came in the mail. Until one day, I turned the page to the Cap: Civil War section and saw Giant Man. Completely spoiled what could have been an awesome surprise in the movie.

And I remember saying the same thing about Maul's lightsaber after my initial viewing of Episode I. They could easily have kept the double blades out of the early trailers and skipped the second blade on the first few toys. Let the audience have an awesome surprise from the double-bladed lightsaber. Then, a few weeks after the movie was out, go ahead and release a "second wave" of Maul toys with the second blade.

Oh well. I guess I should just leave marketing to the professionals.

clkeagle: stretch the suspension of disbelief like the Ewoks did in Jedi

Even as a 13-year-old Star Wars superfan, I realized it was stupid for an arboreal species to have such stubby arms and legs.

They can't even reach their own ears, which makes me wonder how they ever managed to put on hats.

I dunno. Some people got upset over the ComicCon trailer that slipped up and revealed Rey is Kylo Ren's little sister, but honestly, so what? There wasn't enough character building to make the reveal of Rey's parents anything more than another "yup, related to a Skywalker" box to check off.
