Was it a double boom?  Aircraft generally produce double booms, unless it's headed directly towards or away from the listener, because there are actually two shockwaves, produced at the wingtips.  The faster they travel, the more separation between booms, and the farther they travel.

When the shuttle used to land at Edwards AFB we'd get twin booms here in LA from its approach, separated by at least a half a second, that would rattle my sliding glass doors like an earthquake.

If it was a single boom, heard over a broad area, it was likely a sonic boom from a meteor, or possibly a fireball.

Or it was aliens.

I know you're Alabamian, subby, but a meteorite is the stuff on the ground, and meteor, or meteoroid, is the stuff that falls from the sky.

If a meteorite made a loud boom, it's because one of your redneck state mates blew it up.

Subby here...

Firstly, sorry for the ad-heavy link. It was the only one I had at the time, and I use an ad-blocker, so I didn't immediately notice.

Not a double boom, for the person asking, and neither the NWS or the county EMA knows what it was. It shook every house in our neighborhood. I thought a car had crashed into the side of my house. It was that loud and shook us that hard. Apparently, it was enough to crack some windows.

First guesses were military aircraft or earthquake, though it seems those things would have been reported right away. They still don't know what it is, but this is the most recent posting from the NWS:

I got double  booms when the space shuttle  blew up over East Texas.

Aware, though it definitely felt like something hit the ground. If you'd have asked me before I knew it was heard across three counties, I'd have said a plane crashed near my house.

Also Alabamians are still supporting this child molester, mainly because they don't believe the women. This is because Alabama is a de facto theocracy populated by inbreds too stupid for Mississippi.

It's obviously a new fancy-shmancy experimental aircraft trying to frighten the locals. Maybe someone on a plane had too much Mexican food while they were flying? Joe Biden's old car backfiring while driving through the area?

Sorry. That's all I've got right now, lame as it may be.

Hey, now... That's not fair to the roughly 35-40% of us who regularly vote against the child molestor's party. It's honestly not much different a makeup from any other state. Our cities lean liberal, and then the more spread out the population get the more right-leaning it gets. Our city slickers are just outnumbered in this state.
