She saw the antlers and a big brown body in the bushes.
And with one shot from her rifle Saturday, Abby Wilson, 14, killed what she thought was a very large white-tailed buck.  It wasn't.

That'll teach him for demanding a shrubbery...

I am not sure how it is possible to mistake an elk for a whitetailed deer. They truly are not similar other than both being 4 legged mammals. The size difference alone should be enough of a clue. Then add in that they are not even close to the same coloring.

SuperChuck: So Dad shot the elk and figured his teenage daughter was far more likely to get away without punishment and threw her under the bus?

This is a typical fark meme, but while teenage daughters might be less likely to be out hunting, they are likely to be much more sober (assuming hunting with dad, don't ask if hunting 'with the girls').  I wouldn't be at all surprised if she downed it (unless it was close enough that she could identify it [assuming she was there] and drunk dad was ready to shoot anything on four legs).

They are not going to do anything this dumb over a kid shooting an elk when she thought it was a deer. She might get a fine and a slap on the wrist at most and for good reason.  Yes, she need to be careful on identifying her target, but let's not get carried away here.

There are no elk known to be in that area and as TFA also pointed out, she's 14 and has probably never even seen an elk. They look similar enough that someone with little experience probably wouldn't know the difference at 100 yards or more.

Yea, if it is dark out and overcast so there is no moon light. If it was light enough to legally hunt, she may as well have confused a horse with a deer.

To be fair, I blame her father. Kids need to be taught to be sure of your target (and what's is beyond). Apparently, her father never showed her what a deer looks like. If she knew what deer looked like, she would have known that wasn't a deer she was shooting at.

If it was in the trees she may have not been able to see the whole animal. And what would make you think it was anything but a deer in an area that supposedly doesn't have anything but deer?

It's like telling a bear hunter in Pennsylvania to make sure it's not a grizzly.

She also took and passed a hunter course. Did they tell her during that course to make sure the antlered animal she was shooting was a deer and not something else? I'm going to guess no, since until now, no one even seem to know there were other antlered animals other than deer there.

I've never seen an elk in Missouri, and this happened within 15 miles of where I live.  This girl has the only known kill of an elk in the county.

This is a much better article: https://www.columbiamissourian.com/news/local/year-old-girl-bags-first-ever-boone-county-elk/article_fec2192e-c8cc-11e7-b4c9-e77c6e52c593.html

The girl:  "After looking at it, I felt pretty stupid," Wilson said, adding she was surprised she mistook such a big animal for a deer. "I couldn't believe it was an elk, especially not in Missouri."

2017-11-14 03:11:19 PM
They didn't try to hide the fact she shot an elk.

Elk aren't known to inhabit that area.

When I was 14, if I saw big antlers on a large cervid in the bushes, I would have taken the shot. There was no particular reason for a person there to be thinking about elk.

I'm sure someone here, coming from open country and tree stand overlooking a pasture type hunting background will foam at the mouth about getting super-clear, molecular identification and life history of the animal in question. In a lot of places, like Missouri, brush hunting in the hills rarely gives you well-lit, completely unobstructed views of what you're hunting.  Whitetail hunting in these conditions requires that you know your background and identify the game (buck/doe, maybe rough age of the animal). If you see antlers, then a light brown body, it's not wildly stupid to assume you're looking at a big buck. Neck and head may have been obscured. This isn't some drunk bumblefark shooting a farmer's cow.

I've hunted heavy brush, successfully, for over 30 years. While the light and visibility aren't always 100% ideal, you should know where the bullet will stop (i.e. in that hillside I'm facing) and how to identify your quarry. It is very possible for a whitetail to look dark-colored in a shadow at a distance. Sometimes their antlers are brown, and not bone-white.

From the way it reads, and the perplexed reaction of the wildlife officials, this really isn't a case of "stupid hunter should know better." It's just an unusual occurance that left everybody scratching their head.

Sure, but she didn't shoot at the first thing that moved.  She more than likely knew it had horns was in the deer family and decided to shoot after a quick process of elimination.  An elk died, not a person.

She deserves a fine, but not a lifetime ban from hunting, IMO.

Hell, in Colorado not only do they have a season and licences for elk, they have become a nuisance animal in some of the more developed mountain areas where seem to know they won't be hunted.

And before you say "like hell they won't be...", consider if you really want to fire a long range firearm in a place surrounded by the houses of high-priced lawyers and rich people who retain high-priced lawyers.

I agree.  This photo just now taken from my living room of animals that are a half-mile away.  There are two elk (cow/calf pair) and one white-tailed deer.  By hunting season, most current-year's elk calves are larger than most white-tailed bucks.

Are elk a protected species in Missouri? Here in Texas they're classified as an exotic (albeit controversially) and if I saw an elk while I was out hunting, it's assumed to be an escapee from an exotics game ranch, and I could harvest it at any time. No tag required, no reporting necessary, they're freebies. That's actually an increasingly common occurrence with some of the more popular exotic species like Axis, Blackbuck, and Aoudad.

Assuming she has never seen a deer, it may have been in brush so she was seeing parts, and it wasn't that light she may have just assumed it was a big deer. I'm not a hunter, but even so I don't think that matters. If she's hunting whitetail deer then all she needs to know is if that animal she's about to shoot is a whitetail deer. Either it is or it isn't. Why would she need to know what an elk looks like? Then again maybe I'm missing something with this line of thought, since I'm not a hunter.

Either it is or it isn't. Why would she need to know what an elk looks like? Then again maybe I'm missing something with this line of thought, since I'm not a hunter.

Because if she doesn't know what an Elk looks like, how do you expect her to know it's an Elk?

As far as anyone there was concerned, (even the DNR) until that day, there was one antlered animal that lived in that area and that is deer. She saw a large 4 legged animal with antlers and had no reason to think it was anything other than a deer because THERE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ANYTHING ELSE THERE!

Why is this so hard for people to understand?

Let me pretend I'm her. I'm hunting whitetail deer. I see an animal, I want to shoot it. But first don't I have to make sure it's what I'm hunting? So that means I look at it and verify by sight it's a whitetail deer.

If it's not a whitetail deer then I can't shoot it. It's irrelevant what it is. It could be a person in a brown coat, an elk, a buffalo, a gigantic mutated warthog...but as long as it's not a whitetail deer I can't shoot it.

That's easy to understand isn't it?

gbv23: To be fair, Elk steak is delicious

Pretty sure folks still hunt them up here in Oregon
(which is mostly like Montana or Idaho if you're not in Portland)

Yes it is!!

abhorrent1: There are no elk known to be in that area and as TFA also pointed out, she's 14 and has probably never even seen an elk. They look similar enough that someone with little experience probably wouldn't know the difference at 100 yards or more.

Exactly.  We can't actually see how big some thing is, we figure that out from context.  Looking through a scope you don't have the big picture, just some trees around--and tress come in various sizes.  Thus you're not going to be able to tell that the animal is too big to be a deer.  Of the things she might expect to see through her scope by far the closest match to what she saw is "deer".  I'm not going to blame her.

Folks in parts of Missouri raise Elk and other non-native-to-the-area critters. I wouldn't be surprised if this was one that got loose.
