Came here to say this, leaving in heels, a tool belt, and a superhero cloak.

Well done, CoE!

Though I'm absolutely sure some people will have a problem with letting kids figure out who they are without reprisal or shame. Because some people are arseholes.

How do they stand on cooties?  Still punishment for girl touching or an absolvable sin?

Held Sandy's hand and had to wear the red C on my frock.  It seemed to bother Sandy even worse since her red C was often misunderstood.  Then, Sandy's older brother beat the cooties from me.

A boy in my son's class wore a girl Halloween costume (Owlette, from PJ Masks), even though that was explicitly against the rules. Nobody complained or ruined the kid's day. It was nice.

Wearing the wrong-gendered costume was explicitly against the rules?  Da fuq?  Was that a gender-enforcing thing, or was it ham-handedly trying to prevent some stupid "guys dress as hot cheerleaders" shenanigans?

"They" probably didn't know WTF Owlette was.

But yeah, I think it's weird to have those kinds of rules. My kids school prohibits weapons.

NCSB: The local fire department came to my daughter's school last month and gave out fire helmets as part of their talk. Red fire helmets for the boys, pink for the girls...no exceptions. My daughter, who hates pink was quite incensed, and wanted to know why they wouldn't let her have a red one too, to which I could only respond 'It's Missouri'. Even at 6 she understands that as shorthand for 'People here are retarded.'

I have never lived in a place weirder about gender than here and I grew up in the South. God forbid you mention she wants the dinosaur in her happy meal not the 'girl' toy. The mulish confusion and distress generated is baffling.  'But don't ya want girl toys?'

I'm sorry I have to disagree.

No child should ever wear heels. It can negatively impact proper skeletal muscle development.

Reinforcing this kind of behavior in children is basically gambling with their lives.  Why not keep life for a child simple and about things they can understand at their current age.

Why was that against the rules?

While I feel glad that the Church of England is trying to make it easier for transgender kids, I also feel like they are mixing up "clothing choices" with "gender identity".

Who cares what kids wear in schools? Well, apart from secondary school girls who insist that any of their number who likes wearing trousers and programming computers must actually be a boy, and ostracise her on that basis. It's a bit sad, really, that after a hundred years of trying to get rid of the notion that there are separate roles for men and women in society, they're coming back with a vengeance.

But that said, again, who cares what kids wear in schools?

The Halloween party announcement doesn't discuss the reasoning behind the rule. I suspect both ideas play into it. But no parents complained, no kids taunted him, and the teacher let it slide.

How is a tool belt or fire helmet gendered? Isn't this the sort of base generalizations that we're trying to avoid? 'Boys should be active and girls should look pretty' is the message  they're sending regardless of who wears what.

Not that effective against lice, aka cooties. I'll never understand how skin parasites were equated with a gendered conditioned, but I guess there were some really dirty girls way back when.

...when I was growing up, lice and cooties were considered two entirely different things (yes, yes, I know the derivation of "cooties" is from "kutu" which is the word used for "bitey bugs like lice and fleas that make you farking itch" in a lot of Malayo-Polynesian languages, but in the 70s when I was a kid where Cooties Were A Concern lice were treated as Something Different That Parents Worried About And Could Get You Sent Home Until The Bugs Were Gone, whereas cooties were an imaginary and unidentifiable plague that you caught from girls (who were apparently carriers for the cooties), kind of like a weird kind of the chickenpox or the measles).

For most of when I grew up, "Cooties" didn't refer to actual physical bugs - "Having Cooties" was a projected "state of mind".

If you were a girl, you were seething with yukky "girl cooties". Those were the imaginary critters who's droppings contained a powerful drug that caused you to be completely impervious to the well established life-affirming hilarity of a well-lit fart.

Girls can be very dirty today.  I lived with one named Skye who never did her dishes or cleaned ever and left clumps of long black hair in the shower drain that looked like a dead rat.

Well, when you're a little kid, clothing choices are kind of a big part of exploring and expressing your identity generally, not just w/r/t gender (I mean, it's kind of a big part of identity for grownups, too, but it's a big part of it for little kids).  And honestly, normalizing 'cross-gender' clothing whether it's a trans kid who identifies with a female role/outfit/character or a cis kid who just thinks Owlette is the coolest PJ Mask character (which she is, because owls), that's a good thing.

I can't believe the grievous slander against girls in this thread. As a little girl in elementary school it was the boys who had cooties.

Can't we just take an example from the cooties and not discriminate based on gender? This church certainly did.

Didn't know that cooties originally meant lice ("cooties" isn't really a thing in the UK, or at least wasn't in my school when I was a kid).

Could it be because of head lice?  They are much harder to get rid of in long hair, so would have had an association with girls.
