León-Tomás found the single salamander - a juvenile - nearly 1,000 feet higher in altitude than researchers expected based on where the only other two individuals of the species were found in 1975.

He found a juvenile, so that means there's at least two more around there. Maybe.
But I wouldn't hold my breath about this species surviving. Maybe like the passenger pigeon, or like that old tortoise that finally died, without ever finding a mate for him.

I know it's terrible, but I want to eat the last of a species.

Of course, you make the meal 'special' and stuff.

But to TASTE the last of an entire species.

I might hunt that meal down, just sayin'

In the sidebar, there's a story about a frog species going extinct.

Shut up scientists. That's what you said back in 1975 about this salamander.

Interesting, I was just asking my wife whatever happened to the Jackson's climbing salamander.

/ been married this long, you run out of sh*t to say to each other

That salamander tried to sexual assault me when I was a young butterfly, no sooner out of the cocoon than he had his weird/sticky salamander hand down in my spindly legs.

Pffft, ain't nothin' rare about these; we've been frying them up and eating them with Ranch dip for almost 40 years now in Flor-ee-duh. Why, you can't spin a seeing eye dog by its tail without hitting a few dozen in St. Augustine at night. Tastes a might bit like deep fried manatee steak with a side of snail darter.
