Theis believes this mistake did have a negative impact on his credit score, but since Contact 6 last spoke with him he says his score has been improving.

Of course it has been. He's recently paid off 4,575,462 dollars in debt.

Voiceofreason01: Lol, subby where did you get the idea that the loan servicing company wouldn't have his SS#?

This. If they *don't* have his SSN, he's probably borrowing from a guy with a fold-up card table on the street corner with a hand-painted sign that says "LOANZ"....

That's not only a typo, it's bad database management.  That field shouldn't be allowed to accept a number that big.  I saw something similar at a university.  One girl's bill should have been $40, but due to SSN number entry issues, it showed on her bill that she had a credit of $9,999,960.  (I had to explain to the IT people this is what a data overflow error looks like.)  Oh, and she wanted her money and she wanted it NOW!  Threatened to sue everyone involved unless she got it.  All she got was a revised bill for $40.00.

You don't understand as much as you think you do.

Of course the "amount owed" field has no upper limit. Could be someone eventually owes a BILLION dollars. Could be more. So their software likely has no upper limit on how much you can owe.

Likewise, there's probably some algorithm that adds money automatically to the owed column in random enough small doses most people don't notice. Just to milk it.

We changed the limit to $20,000 so it would propagate and blow up the calculated fields.  Also, if you owed more than that you'd have bigger problems.  Of course this was back in the olden days before college costs went crazy.

Oh my god.

I might have literally killed to only have $20,000 in student loan debt when I graduated.

billiamaire: I would love to know how in the usa you get away with NOT giving your ssn for anything. Me mum is nigh on to 92, so far it's worked for the old git. I used to try her tactics to absolutely no avail. Cell phone, doctor, prescriptions, ATM, you name it, they have mine. I've never been able to get away with not giving it out.

Your social security number is your maritime law ID code, and it should be tattooed on your body. Corporations are people.

Huh?  Which should the DBA use?

bigint-2^63 (-9,223,372,036,854,775,808) to 2^63-1 (9,223,372,036,854,775,807)8 Bytes
int-2^31 (-2,147,483,648) to 2^31-1 (2,147,483,647)4 Bytes
smallint-2^15 (-32,768) to 2^15-1 (32,767)2 Bytes
tinyint0 to 255 1 Byte

Maybe nvarchar(6) to save space?  :P

Slow news day, I guess.

Except for that school shooting in northern california where at least 5 are reported dead.  Happened at 8am this morning PST.  Still not on fark.

I shot a squirrel with a BB gun this morning and I'm surprised it wasn't a newsflash on Fark.

Social security numbers are like Cold War classified secrets. The government has them and the Soviet Union has them. Only the general public does not.

(With our post-Cold War incompetent NSA, the general public has a lot of them too.)
