We forget how dangerous these winter sports actually are.  Today, an elite skier once again played Russian roulette with Death and came up snake eyes.

I really hope that when it's time to distribute the HOTY awards, someone will plot to nominate this one.

Who knew hurling yourself down the side of a mountain at 100mph could be so dangerous?

I tried to tell Poisson that Cyanide and Slalom wasn't gonna be the new Xtreme sport on the Dew Tour.

I'm amazed more people don't die from falling while going 130 km/hr down a sheet of ice while standing on a couple of waxed boards.

Its not so much the hurling down the mountain that is the problem.  It is the cartwheeling deceleration and impact on terrain.

You can make motorsports (ok, not motorcycles) remarkably safe.  You can ban flying wedges in football.  Eventually they may even put helmets on pitchers.  But there isn't any way to really give a downhill skier any protection.  Miss a turn and the g-forces break your neck in luge (no idea if that happens in bobsled, but it can't be safe).  And of course outside of winter sports it wouldn't be the Tour de France without a descent down the alps (waaaay less protection than a motorcyclist, at motorcycle speeds).  Of course I think more bicyclists die from the drugs, but the only thing you can do about the descents is to stay the fark out of mountains (put the end at the top?  You kind of need the ascents.)

Sonny Bono?

The accident scene wasn't surprising as he left a normal distribution of remains on the mountain.

All of my training accidents are planned, scheduled and organized.
Just park the ambulance here, I'll be right back.

Clearly you have never ridden a fat bike - the two-wheeled version not the overweight local tramp.
