The internet should be ignored a bit more often.

How exciting, an internet thingy outlived its "humorous", "lame", "mildly annoying" and "seriously?" phases and has reached the nirvana that is who gives a fark?

Look at it this way - will it actually affect the piece of equipment if you call it by the stupid, stupid name people voted for? I'm guessing there won't be a lot of people refusing to use the ferry because its name is a stupid (typo/grammar error intentional), nor would the name Boaty McBoatface have hindered that particular vessel in its research.

If you don't want to deal with the public making a joke of something, don't give them a ripe opportunity to make a joke of it.

I feel like using a small committee to decide this kind of thing would be better than truly democratizing the process.

I agree with Kate, whoever she is: I know that it's not original but at least it's wholesome and it's fun and we could do with a bit of that in 2017.

Are you trying to say naming vessels after some 'important' person is not as boring as f⌵ck? Because we are going to have to disagree on that if you are. Oh look, another boat named after a person I've never heard of, whoopee, how exciting, said no one ever.

Couldn't they just go with "Bloody?'

Why does it matter if it's "the same joke"? It's not like Ferry McFerryface is really all that different from Boaty McBoatface - both are stupid names for a relatively utilitarian thing.

Maybe if you had heard of more of those "important" people you'd understand that they're all "important" for different reasons, actual real reasons, and those reasons tend to be interesting, or at least noteworthy.  Which is kind of the opposite of "boring."  I'd prefer to live in a society that recognizes and celebrates that.  It sounds like you'd prefer to live in a society that celebrates mediocrity and predictable, unoriginal, unfunny "jokes."

The fact that noteworthy people deserve recognition does not negate the fact that if an agency decides to name a thing based on an online contest's results, they should abide by the results of the online contest. The failure was in creating a contest that would allow a stupid result, not in the fact that the contest yielded a stupid result.

I don't think they are under any actual obligation to honor the result of the poll, but I agree that this thing was very poorly thought through.  Better to have asked for suggestions, curated them, and then had a poll of approved names.  I don't care if it's named something goofy as long as it's at least got a bit of substance to it, unlike this idiotic vapid Xy McXface "joke."  At this point they might as well name the others with emojis.

Could even have auctioned off naming rights to the public, though you'd have to have rules so you could name it Great Aunt Agatha, but not name it Wayne Kerr or something similar.

Seriously, it's the name of a ferry, a pretty trivial thing really. It's not worth being upset over.

In over 200 years, I've yet to see the downside in deciding things by popular vote. Why, we've even got checks in place to see to it that some calculated percentage of the population can't overrule the common good.

Actually, the article said the top 3 results were notable doctors.  The Ferry McFerryface was the fifth result even losing to Boaty McBoatface.

I do agree they should honor the results if they do a poll which leads to the question: why did they not?

Guessing they wanted the news story about what a quirky name they selected.

Now I'm not saying that I have all the answers, but how hard would it be to have someone approve names to be voted on. I know no one has ever done this in the past but it might be worth a shot to try this.
