Are they going to wait while a crowd having an impromptu criterium on public roads block an intersection while they all make a left turn against oncoming traffic?

I'd buy one just to have this feature.  If you're too dumb to follow traffic rules on a bike, you're too dumb to ride a bike.  Same goes for car drivers as well.

They tend to move in a slightly more erratic way.

No, they behave like humans who believe that they don't have to follow the rules that govern roads.  Most places that I've been have a thing against bikes being ridden on sidewalks and that bikes are supposed to follow the same traffic laws as cars.  Since it's rarely enforced and not exactly taught to many bike riders, this isn't really a surprise.

Well I am sure if they were driving vehicles that had bigger mass and were ignoring the traffic laws the same as these people they do on their bikes, you'd complain more!

Spandex is like birthday suits -- the only people you'll ever see wearing it are the people you'd rather not see wearing it.

Will self driving cars be able to handle areas where the roads are snow and ice covered for 5-6 months out of the year?  The roads around here are poorly cared for and the side streets are ice-rutted nightmares for weeks on end.

I'd have to say 'dumb' is the correct adjective.  I was on the cycle team in college, and biked around the city for a few years afterwards until I had one too many close calls on LA streets.  I followed the traffic laws because I wanted to live.

It doesn't astonish me any more to see cyclists barrel thru stop signs and red lights like the rules don't apply to them.  With traffic in the intersection.  I see them and yield.  But your average tweetwaffle in an SUV may not.

What's astonishing these days is to see a cyclist in full spandex and bag balm stop at a controlled intersection.

Bicyclers are a cancer on normal society, and until they self-regulate into following traffic rules, I hate them all.

2017-11-11 12:22:06 PM
Im actually on the cyclist side, as long as what they are doing doesn't interfere with what I'm doing.  When they follow the letter of the law, they usully just make things miserable for everyone.  Its a very dangerous and stupid thing to ride a bike in city traffic, and i respect testicular fortitude.

Pure laziness. The excuse I commonly see for this is, "It takes more energy to get back up to speed." Whiners. If you aren't trying to cover 100 miles in a day by bicycle, that extra work won't kill you, it will just make you stronger. Rarely a bad thing.

I was listening to a podcast the other day, and the interviewees were talking about the possibility of self-driving cars talking to each other and offering money to induce other cars to make way for them. So if you were in a hurry and were willing to pony up some dough, you'd be able to have your car bribe other cars to let you through. That's kind of mind-blowing, and indicative of the emergent behaviors that will come that we haven't even thought about yet.

Garmin makes the Varia™ Rearview Radar that you can put on your bike, it's neat but also pricey. It would be cool if it worked with cars on the road.

Free idea for a tech startup: make an attachment that jams the radar and laser sensors many cars have, causing them to think an 18-wheeler is coming straight at them out of your bike.

It is when it's a douchebiker. I've twice had those spandex-wearing jerks plow into the side of my car because they can't be arsed to stop at stop signs like they're legally obligated to do.

Bicycles belong on bike lanes, and only bike lanes. In any other case, they're at best a nuisance, and most of the time an outright hazard.
