Rather then abnegating the series' acuity, the revelations give it a sickening edge: Louie was a kind of propaganda piece for the decency of Louis C.K.

The writer was so excited about abnegating that they forgot how then/than works. Ouch.

holdmybones: The writer was so excited about abnegating that they forgot how then/than works. Ouch.

Well, the writer's probably been waiting for months, if not years, to use "abnegating" in a sentence. You know, correctly and stuff. And he got to throw in "acuity" as well, in the very same sentence, and there are lots of other 10-cent words and phrases throughout the piece, as well: "cultural firmament," "cacophonous," "flummoxing," the list goes on. This was probably a multi-orgasm effort, so a little then/than typo can probably be excused.

CK is most likely a self loathing perv, but he probably isn't a Weinstein or O'Reilly level monster whose predilections were widely known and protected by their organizations and even the terms of their employment contracts.

He is a celebrity sure, but the piling on I am seeing around him almost has me feeling sorry for him. He is getting the same treatment as these truly evil people and he isn't anywhere near where they are in terms of what he did or the power he had over other people in his industry. Ugh.

I AM AN ORACLE!!!

And for the record I don't think Louis CK ever tried to propagandize himself as as being moral or decent on his show as the lede in TFA purports. In fact it was quite the opposite. The show is about a pretty lonely and morally confused divorced guy in his mid-40s. He makes plenty of mistakes on that show and frankly, there weren't very many happy endings. It's more like one step forward, two steps back for Louis most of the time.

I gotta argue with you there... Cacophonous and flummoxing are 7-cent words at best.

In what world does Louis CK have that power?  Didn't most of these happen before he was quasi famous?

The guy seems like a perv but he's also not a powerful Hollywood figure.  He deserves criticism and consequences but it has to be based on what he did.

I'm not saying what he did was right, I'm saying that suggesting he said  "Watch me masturbate or you'll never work in Hollywood again" isn't true.  Louis CK has simply never had that level of power and he definitely didn't have it when this happened.

1. 4 of the women were named, 1 kept herself anonymous. The second clause of the sentence you're improperly trying to correct makes this clear.

2. In the same way that punching someone does not mean you are a murderer, acting in a sexually inappropriate way does not mean that you are a rapist. What he did was bad enough and will be punished accordingly. No reason to hyperbolize it further.

Who's saying he is? I see a lot of folks responding by saying, "He's not Harvey Weinstein." But they seem to be replying to something that hardly anyone has said as far as I can tell. What I'm seeing is people saying he abused his power. He clearly did as he admits. It's possible he didn't know he had that power, but I wonder. Would he really have felt comfortable asking the question had there not been a power disparity at play?

I think most people can see this is not as bad as drugging someone (Cosby), clearly abusing power and forcibly raping people (Weinstein), or grabbing other people's junk (Spacey).

However, I don't understand why so many people feel the need to dwell on that fact as if it's the most important thing.

Totally fair, it doesn't help that a lot of his fans want to find a way to get over this so he can keeping making them laugh.  Not being Harvey Weinstein isn't a defense for being an absolute pervert who still had power over these women.

I just found the comment about Hollywood going to far the other way, don't gloss over what he did or say at least he's not Harvey but at the same time don't pretend he had the level of power Harvey did either.

Does that make more sense?

Yeah, I don't think he's a rapist, do you? A sexual deviant perhaps with a masturbation fetish. It doesn't sound at all as if he were intentionally leveraging anything. He just wanted to get off, not realizing that it may be interpreted as a power thing.
He should have found an outlet in a private sex club or something. Too bad his fantasy world was crossing the line into real life. You just don't go there.
He probably figured that if you ask enough times, someone will say yes.
Not defending his actions, which were wrong, just looking at it a few different ways.

The "power" comes from no one wanting to make waves or get labeled as a "trouble-maker". Same reason none of the guys Spacey groped came forward until more did and most stayed anonymous. It's a contract industry. Your rep is everything when it comes to landing the next job.

It read more like acknowledgement to me. Like maybe he recognized there was a power dynamic at play that he was unwilling to recognize before.

Why do so many people automatically read bullshiat into apologies these days? I understand that lots of folks, especially public figures, make bad and insincere apologies in a desperate bid to save themselves and their careers, but Louie's apology letter didn't strike me that way at all. It seems like he understands that he's toast, he recognizes why, he expresses remorse, and he says he's going to go away for a while. Seems pretty contrite and sincere to me. Am I missing something?
