Actually, the real news is that Japan had the utter gall to protest that shiat. The "sex slave" in question was basically a female prisoner of war, but since she wasn't a soldier, and since her torture was in the form of rape, she, along with many others during WWII in Korea, had to also bear the shame and stigma and moniker of being a "comfort woman".

In 2015, Japan "compromised" on the issue by giving out a paltry sum of money to some of the remaining living victims, and said the issued was forever settled. Meaning, don't ever bring it up again. Most of the survivors don't feel this is enough..because they have still never received an actual APOLOGY.

So Japan protests Trump hugging one of these surviving "comfort women", saying it was in "bad taste", basically,  since the issue has been "settled".

I have news for Japan. It hasn't.

and I have news for Trump. Whether or not he realizes it, he has finally done something right in his presidency, and it was by total accident, of that I am quite sure.

Dinner with a sex slave, or dinner off of a sex slave. Cause I've heard weird things in Japan....

The president was served seafood caught off islands at the centre of a long-running territorial dispute between Seoul and Tokyo.

There is no area, island, or shoal in the oceanic waters from Singapore to Vladivostok that isn't disputed

Or quietly acknowledge them, but add in a bit about how everything worked out great for everyone in the end.

Don't worry, I'm sure he didn't like it and biatched about wanting the nearest McD's for a Big Mac.

Also, Japan, STFU about protesting the gal you forced into prostitution for your soldiers. You are out assholing Trump, and we can't have that.

Shinzo Abe and his government has long been WWII revisionists. To them, murdering millions and enslaving millions more in East Asia and Asian Pacific islands was a righteous campaign to "free" those people from western colonialism. They think that they were doing the people they were murdering a favor.

F*ck the lot of them.

Comfort women was a euphemism to obfuscate what they really were so people's sensibilities aren't offended (mostly on the Japanese side).

The attitude of Japan's current leadership is about on par with a party in Germany in favor of revising Holocaust casualty figures downward and removing mentions of Nazi aggression from textbooks. The way Japan has treated these women is f*cking shameful, from the end of the war until today.

And no, Trump does not deserve credit for keeping the issue in the forefront. That belongs to the new government of South Korea, which orchestrated the dinner and the appearance of the woman in question. It's also worth noting that Trump has a very close relationship with Shinzo Abe, who is one of the leading Japanese revisionists.

That's not really noteworthy; the Japanese don't really care anything at all about internal American politics, as long as America stays friendly.

The ultra-nationalists that have Abe's back are no friends to American or Western interests... but they're even LESS friendly to a powerful China regaining dominance over the region.  They'll go to just about any length to keep America's friendship while that's a threat.

THIS

I love Japanese culture, enough to have learned the language and studied it, but the whole attitude towards WWII is insane. I think it partly reflects the brainwashing of the Showa era, which older people were exposed to and passed on to their kids (who are now the leaders of the country). They're now bringing it back by turning NHK into a propaganda station - Abe has purged the news stations indirectly with political pressure, which is a very Japanese approach.

It's hardly unique (look at the whole Confederate revisionism) but it's still deplorable. I'm not a fan of Trump but good on him for this dinner.

The South Koreans make pretty good fried chicken that's not KFC so it would be a step above chicken nuggets. I hear the cheese buldak is tasty.

Politically correct to the Japanese, who are loathe to admit to war crimes. And the age of some or most of these 'comfort women' - 13-year-olds kidnapped and taken to the front lines. I read a victim statement from one who was 10. There is nothing politically correct about comfort children.
