There was an RC Copter simulator for the PS1 back in the day. I remember that a few levels in it got impossible, but I think it (or a game like it) would be fun to play again someday. I also was thinking of Mister Mosquito recently. That was one weird-ass game right there. I think the same developer did Mad Maestro, which was tough but fun as well.

Anyone remember Deception? I wasted a lot of time with that one.

All I've been actually playing recently though is Rocksmith. Bought the Monkees song pack and been enjoying playing Valleri on bass.

Mechwarrior Online and Mutant Football League.

And a lot of it.

Right now my favorite indie is Mutant League, but I do enjoy a bit of Stardew Valley occasionally.

I have been playing some Cuphead, World of Warships with some clan wars stuff, and going back to GTA V for fun.  Debating going from the AMD 6300FX processor to the 8350FX as my last upgrade on this rig or just going all in on a 4k setup... I could do the processor and then go 1050 GTX ti 4gig on video card and last another few years or just save up quadruple what that would take and go for a new tower build with repurposing this beast as a media center/living room something...
Dunno.  Also still working on my first Fallout 4 playthrough, I find it hard to allot time for it.
I guess I should just fire up Rocket League again as well.

I am making it a point to spend more time playing games than I do reading about them, and thus far I am failing.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I feel worse than the kids these days who spend more time watching other people play games and talk shiat.

Ahh, Jazz Jackrabbit... a game I only played the shareware version of.  Brings me back to the days of One Must Fall 2097, Epic Pinball and Extreme Pinball, and my ultimate favorite, Hammer of the Gods.

I've been playing Agents of Mayhem, but mostly Rocksmith (bass) and SF-IV which I picked up the full version of from Humble a few weeks ago for like $7.50.

thatguyoverthere70: All I've been actually playing recently though is Rocksmith. Bought the Monkees song pack and been enjoying playing Valleri on bass.

I've bought quite a few songs off Rocksmith, but most of the time they don't have what I want.  I've had decent luck with the fan-made custom dlc.  If official King Crimson stuff comes out, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Playing the previous Wolfenstein through to get in the mood for the new one. For indie games I started The Long Dark but got stuck where you can't advance the story without a random event that never happens, so fark that.

I'm doing one last upgrade on my rig as well lol.

I bought 8 GB of DDR3 on eBay (going from 4 GB to 8) but one of the sticks was bad. *sigh* eBay seller argued with me, I asked eBay to step in and got a refund.

I currently have (yes it's an old rig)

Athlon x2 255
4 GB DDR3 1600 (2 x 2 GB)
AMD R7 350 (4 GB GDDR5)
275 GB SSD and 3 TB SATA hdds

I can bump the CPU up to a 1065T which will basically give it 3x the oomph, and get another 4 GB of RAM. Next year I'll probably see about doing a new build.

Yup... I had a 4 GB E8600 setup that flew and ran things really well. PSU went and took out the motherboard with it. My mother in law had just gotten a new system, and gave me her old one... which is this one lol.

Yeah x2 255 is AM3.

This week was mostly Judgment: Apocalypse Survival Simulation.

I have to say that this is more fun than it looks from the outside. It's a colony simulator, ultimately descending from Dwarf Fortress, but boiled way down. Diablo meets Rimworld, with shades of Populous.

The apocalypse has happened. You were out camping. Ned is dead, and the three of you are now struggling to survive in an old abandoned canyon outside of nowhere. You're all basically idiots, with a few interests based on your job.

You must find or grow food and resources, research new occult rituals and weapons, and fight off the evil curses that plague what remains of humanity. But try not to attract attention.

It's a top-down colony simulator with simple graphics, but it's a lot of fun. Not as complex as Rimworld. You set up basic production chains of crafting, but you've got to have the people to be able to do it. Eventually, you get equilibrium of inventory to use. You create squads of people to send out into the countryside for scavenging and rescue purposes. Combat is quick, cell-based, and strategic, as you level up survivors and weapons.

It's still in early access. I've got about 7 hours in since buying it on Wednesday. I am save scumming like crazy, because the Challenging difficulty is indeed. Researches, both occult and normal, are more important than they seem at first. Dedicate people if you can. Keep your awareness down, and the demons won't find you.

Take out the reapers as fast as you can with your strongest melee tanks.

That and the ram should keep you set for a bit.  I need to get up from the 6300FX just to run the new DOOM or many other modern games at min.  Running a 2 gig 750 ti card, it does what it can but I still get chop on recent games.  It runs most very well though.

My favorite indie game so far has been stardew valley, starbound, and Cthulu Saves the World. Patrician isn't an indie game but it's not well known where you play a German trading family running trade routes.

This past weekend I played in an extra life curse of strahd marathon run through and are planning on doing another long session in the next few weeks.

In tomb of annihilation my character finally met her in-laws and learned that her father-in-law is suffering from the death curse, adding more determination to find the cure. Her husband's noble family runs a museum and also had 2 expeditions not come back, adding more mystery. She now has to do a favor for her mother-in-law's bookie to wipe away some of her debt and investigate why so many racing dinos keep dying.

TL;DR lots of side quests that just got added

In other tabletop news, a new D&D game I'm playing in we're temporarily playing the grand heroes that free the world from a Lich that eradicated civilization hundreds of years ago and regularly culls the land. There's basically no one older than 40 years old, almost all knowledge has been lost, paladins and clerics don't exist. We basically play a d&d seal team 6 that has risen up and discovered a bit of secret knowledge, the wish spell, to finally defeat the Lich.

Then we will jump a few hundred years into the future and start at level 1.

I'm planning on jumping right into NaNoWriMo and record the exploits of a campaign that was put on a long hiatus and creating a campaign guide based on the world.

Still loving Fortnite, despite their loathsome PVP grab and their lack of attention to the PvE that we paid for...

Barely started Destiny 2 (PC) and have no clue what I'm doing at this point.  It's pretty and I am enjoying it so far.  I hope for good things.

Mario is sitting in my glove compartment.  Going to dog-sit for my cousin tomorrow.  He has my switch, and I intend to take full advantage of it when I get there.

Is she at least rocking dual monitors?  That has to be critical in that field, I know it is in mine for the lowest level employees.  In a perfect world I can afford a 4k$ 4k setup with VR and a nice Logitech driving setup with the room to make it work.  Someday.  Someday hopefully.

I decided to dig around back in the archives a bit this week & played a looong game of Civ III/Conquests.  That was fun, I can't even begin to count up the hours/days/weeks/months playing assorted Civs over the decades thanks to Sid Meyer.

Indie games?  My favorites by far are from Spiderweb Software.  I go back & forth as to which series I enjoy playing more Geneforge or Exile/Avernum.  For those who know the game/series, Jeff hopes to have the remake of Avernum 3 Ruined World out towards the end of January.

next week, i'm getting ready to play in a tabletop RPG pathfinder game.  the adventure path is 'shattered star'.  my character concept is 'dhampir archaeologist/necromancer.'  here's the party composition:

1. me (necromancer)
2. Tiefling magus
3. ifrit warpriest
4. catfolk bard.

i'm going to be the most human looking of the bunch, and i'm playing the creepy goth necromancer.  something tells me that diplomacy isn't going to be our strong suite.  should be a fun game.

The most recent indie game that I've played and enjoyed is Off-Peak, free on both Steam and itch.io.

img.fark.netView Full Size

img.fark.netView Full Size

It's a lovely short walking simulator set in a surreal train station. Great atmosphere and design. The same developer launched a paid game called The Norwood Suite which I've bought but not yet played. I plan to install it the next rainy day with high expectations.

As for other indie games, I'm not sure where to begin. I play loads of them. For freeware I visit itch.io daily to add games to my collections. I have 40 collections on my account with an average of 100 games each. I've not played most but of those I have I particularly enjoyed Saturn V, The Endless Express, Dream Sim, Grab Them by the Eyes, Bellular Hexatosis  and of course the short but cathartic Drumpulous.

Over on the paid side from itch and Steam there are many others that I liked such as the brilliant Else Heart.Break(), Little Inferno, Stardew Valley, Domestic Dog, Ether One, Surfasaurus, Gone Home, Postal 2, Sunset, Door to Door and Redshirt. I can't be bothered to link all of those but they're all on Steam.

Indie games are great. Fresh ideas, original design and not a microtransaction or loot box in sight.

GOG was giving away Civ III complete last week, so I spent an evening reliving my first sophmore year of college.

Then Humble dropped that strategy bundle, so I bought OOTP $18 for a dollar and spent the rest of the week at work running various historical matchups in the background while I worked on a new exhibit.

(For the record, using modern era rules, the '52 Brooklyn Dodgers beat the '92 Braves in 6 games, but Sid Bream had more stolen bases than Jackie Robinson.)

That bundle also came with Rebuild 3.  I've been burned out on zombies since before Walking Dead, but I enjoy the SimCity aspects of the game.  You rebuild a city while fending off hordes and other factions, and your people develop skills & perks, and there's a simple tech tree.  The equipment management UI is bad, though.

Tabletop:  My Fallout: Texas party finally has a fully functioning locomotive, and they're about to lead a work party to repair a rail line to a nearby town ruin.  They're going to have to fight a running battle with raiders along the line until they hit the raider settlement at the end.  It gives me a chance to use my HO train cars as terrain.

Finally, more Betrayal at Baldur's Gate.  The game is such an improvement over Betrayal at the House on the Hill.  I still love BatHotH, but Baldur's Gate is streamlined in all the right places.

2017-11-10 09:20:22 AM
So, in the theme of my purchasing obsolescent games for cheap, I've given Stellaris a break after a civilization with 4X my fleetpower annihilated me, and am now playing X-Com enemy unknown.  I like this game a lot.  The combat reminds me of Wage of War: Business of Battle, which I enjoyed playing.  My problem is I tend to save scum these types of games, so I am making a concerted effort to "accept" losses on missions.  I just got my first MEC suits and soldiers this morning.  I just ran into Chrsallids and zombies, so the difficulty is starting to ramp up.  I remember the comments from this over the years, so I am expecting a bloodbath pretty soon.

I'm not sure if they were indie or not, but I think it was Bullfrog that released a tank game in the 90's where you had to run through 3-dimensional mazes, and could choose from light, medium, and heavy tanks to accomplish it.  The game was ok (my father loved it though) but the music was fantastic.

That could have been a great series, but the game studio was run by a baseball guy and it went defunct. Would love to see a sequel eventually made by a professional studio, it's very much a "Single-Player MMO" game.

Destiny 2 until then.
