I am pretty sure Jersey Mike's makes a better Reuben and theirs is not an LTO.  Screw Subway.  I'm making my own Reuben.

A Reuben can't be made with turkey.

As far as fast food, Subway is OK.

I make my own corned beef. It's easy and I got a floor freezer. Good to go.
N.E. boiled dinners and then it is time to get serious.
reubens
Caraway rye bread, kraut, dressing and some Emmenthaler.
You want OG? then open faced under a broiler.
I like mine grilled and pressed.  I little denser and crisper.
OH,  we need some good  sour, cold  pickles to cut the richness.  Crunchy!

The corned beef was fine, but their rye bread was terrible.

From the linked review:

Subway's version is a more accessible, mainstream version of the signature deli sandwich.

WTF?

Subway will never ever have a "Reuben" until they steal or copy the recipe of the very special toasted seed bread that are in Jewish delis. You either do or do not know exactly what I am talking about.

GD it! There is no such thing as a turkey reuben. Just like you can't have chicken fajitas.

Yes you can as long as you call it a "turkey reuben" and not a "reuben". Ditto for a pastrami reuben. I am sorry to have to inform you of this.

Dude. A reuben is corned beef. That is what it is. As long as that part is there, you can call it purple, taco, stacked, smoked, etc. As long as it is corned beef.

I am obliged to comment in this thread.

Nope.  Not a Reuben.  The turkey isn't even the issue here.  You can debate if a Turkey Reuben qualifies as a Reuben, as a "Turkey Reuben," or as neither, but it's a solid sandwich.  Probably.  I've never had one.

The issue is the spongy, sugary "bread" that they use for their subs.  That cannot work with the salty, savory innards of a Reuben.

2017-11-09 09:21:08 PM
I only eat California/turkey Reubens (or Rachels for those of you that call it that). Turkey, slaw, sourdough.

I don't understand the traditional Reuben. I thought maybe it was a "whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" type of thing, but no. It just tastes like ass.

Exactly. That's what I said. A ""Reuben"" is corned beef.

I can't remember the name of the place (or I'd shame them), but I went into a place, saw they had a Reuben and ordered it. It was on a bun, had turkey instead of corned beef, american cheese, coleslaw, and while I don't know what dressing they used, it wasn't Russian or Thousand Island.

I just... How do you get it that wrong??

Togo's pastrami is orders of magnitude better than Subway's and us the best pastrami by far of any chain (and quite a few delis).

Sadly, Togo's hasn't had rye bread for like 20 years now. Their rye bread was awesome. Still upset It's gone...

So I moved to a new city and I'm trying out the Reubens one by one. One place decided it would be a good idea to put lettuce and tomatoes on the damn thing, another place did too but at least the foreign born owner had a knowing look in his eye when I said no to those particular toppings. Next place bragged they "probably make the best Reuben in the valley." They served a sandwich on a festive cinnamon marbled rye with raw cabbage. Then I'm at the town bar and they have one on the menu that turns out is actually really good.

/Utah is weird

I tried the reuben last year.  Meh.  The only thing worth eating at Subway is the BMT.  On white bread, with everything but pickles and green peppers.  Garnish with salt and pepper, oil and vinegar.  Don't toast it, just smoosh it.

The meatball sub isn't bad, but there are plenty of better places to get those.  The Italian market up the street has a deli attached, and they make a killer meatball sub for just $5.

Many years ago, when Subway first advertised their Reuben sandwich, I thought I'd try it.

"Reuben sandwich, please," I said.

"What kind of bread?" they asked.

A bit puzzled, I replied, "Well rye, of course."

They said, "We don't have rye."

Haven't been back since.

Goddamitsomuch! A Reuben sandwich is a grilled sandwich.

It does not come on a bun, a loaf or farking marbled rye.  It doesn't include turkey, ham, tofurkey, cole slaw, farking Kimchee, Monterey Jack, American or any other cheese but Swiss or any dressing other than Thousand Island or any other bread but sliced dark rye.

I'm sure you can make very tasty sandwiches with some of those verboten ingredients I mention, but it won't be a Reuben sandwich anymore than calling Sarah Huckabee Sanders "Marie Curie" will make her a Nobel Prize winner, ok?

But since folks have trouble getting this straight, here's how it's done. Original Blackstone Hotel Reuben recipe

easy, remove half of your brain and become a sandwich "artist"

now if you will excuse me, I need to pick up a cheeseburger with no cheese, bun or toppings; instead put the patty on the plate, add some gravy and a side of mashed potatoes instead of fries.

"sir, would you rather order the Salisbury steak lunch?  it also comes with your choice of broccoli or asparagus as a side"

why the fark would i want broccoli on a cheeseburger?

This thread is great just for all the people freaking out over what a reuben actually is.

I'm actually kinda torn. I like my reubens with mustard OR thousand island. Whenever I have it one way I determine that way is the best, then I go get it the other way and decide that way is the best.
Either way they truly are sandwiches of the gods. Though I'll admit that for me a reuben is mostly a vehicle for sauerkraut.

The bread isnt up to par. The only small city I've found that serves an authentic Reuben is Oak "We built the Hiroshima Bomb" Ridge, TN. Get a good one on dark Rye at The Time Out Deli. It's in a gas station.

Best Reuben I ever had was at a small joint called Vaudeville in Fredericksburg TX. It had a Brussels sprout slaw on it that was awesome.

In other news, went to a place in Fort Worth that advertised a panini and in quotes next to it, "Cubano". I took one look at the word Cubano and said "That's what I'm having."

This is what I get.
img.fark.netView Full Size

Sure enough, it's a chicken panini. Why call it a Cubano if it's not going to be that? Just because it has ham and is a pressed sandwich? Stupid menu writer. I accept that I didn't read the description, but it's no better than calling it an Italian beef because it's got peppers and onions on it.

Local tavern in NH makes this bad boy, rendering fast-food Reubens pointless:
Grilled Corned Beef Reuben our 6-hour braised fresh corned beef with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and Swiss cheese on marbled rye

the unbelievably tender corned beef and tangy sauerkraut combine for sandwich perfection

Thanks, but I have tried Katz.. and Murphy's, Kenny & Ziggys, Jason's, Chatter's, and a few others. They're good (most of them. Chatters is probably my favorite for quality & price), but ToGo's just had something different. I dunno, maybe it was in their Russian dressing. Or maybe it's just nostalgia. :)
