Yes, this is exactly the sort of thing that will definitively prove WaPo is a staunch pillar of journalistic integrity with no bias against Trump that would ever seep into its reporting.

I hate Trump as much as the next Farker, but this kind of self-mastabatory nonsense is just whining, pure and simple. Stop. You're. Not. Helping.

draypresct: Acknowledging reality

Four journalists writing about an entirely fictitious event from teh standpoint of supporters of the losing candidate.

Yep, that's "reality" right there...

/Dems missed their chance with Biden/Warren
//Clintons must have some hellacious dirt on Ol Joe
///Democracy dies in derpness

We got stuck in this world because they made the LOTR movies without the Battle for the Shire.

That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it. When people weren't educated enough in the collective subconscious that the toughest battles are the ones fought at home..

this is what happened.

educated enough to know better, I should have specified.

The Scouring of the Shire. But, yeah.

This was clearly less an article than it was some writer's personal catharsis to spare them from a breakdown.

I bet Beau Biden was murdered by the Clintons, right?

Okay, so Rachel Sklar's calling is probably not fantasy or comedy writer. Although I did find this bit mildly amusing:

Vogue runs a profile of Chelsea Clinton with a charming anecdote about her daughter, Charlotte, selling Girl Scout cookies to staffers at the White House. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) moves to impeach Clinton, alleging that her family is trying to profit off the presidency.

2017-11-09 06:36:36 PM
I'd make a snarky comment about leaving out the inevitable impeachment proceedings, but clearly the author is too high on whatever she's on to even notice.

Writing an alternate history is "acknowledging reality"?

Yes, several aspects of the article acknowledged reality. Thus the hyperlinks to discussions of actual events.

/Think of the alternate history as a literary device.

No.

With narrow wins across the midwest this is how it plays out:

Republicans keep the House and Senate. Clinton's legislative agenda is dead before it even gets out of the gates.

House GOP ratchet up all manner of investigations keeping Clinton on the defensive.

Senate GOP stonewall SCOTUS nominees. On the very unlikely chance they let her nominate someone it'll be a pro-corporate candidate who is, at best, republican-lite on social issues.

Women's march, which energized liberals nationwide and woke a lot of people up, never happens.

The radicalization of disillusioned white men continues, but mostly goes unnoticed.

Democrats moderately under-perform in a bunch of special elections, and although they win the safe top of ticket races vacated by Clinton appointees they continue to bleed local seats nationwide.

Democrats, happy with a landmark historic victory, forget about down ticket races and set their alarms for the next important election in November 2020. Same as last time.

The House GOP use the debt ceiling like a weapon, hammered into place by Fox and the RW media, to force a conservative budget through and slowly unpick Obamacare.

Fox and the RW media use the RW hatredof Clinton to initiate a second Tea Party uprising that makes the first one look like a family picnic.

The alt-right don't kill anyone. This is good. But they instead continue to slowly permeate, like roaches without having to scuttle when the sunlight shines on them.

With no women's march, and Democrats asleep at the wheel regarding down ticket races, and an energized GOP, Democrats get beat like a rented mule in Virginia and possibly even lose NJ.

The GOP in Virginia institute a raft of new voter ID and poll access laws to ensure the state is solid red for a decade.

2018 is a bloodbath for democrats, who sleep through it, and sets the stage for the GOP to be in the driving seat for the 2020 redistricting nationwide to ensure another decade of electoral dominance with massively gerrymandered districts.

2020: Thanks to massively restricted voting and voter disillusionment with Clinton's lack of legislative success some republican shiatweasel wins the presidency, but is smart enough to not be as obviously odious as Trump.

2021: Said shiatweasel promptly fills whatever SCOTUS seats were empty (at least one, possibly more) and the innumerable federal judge posts with partisans, the older Republican SCOTUS justices retire, allowing young replacements. SCOTUS is solid RWNJ for the next generation.

2022: GOP, through a raft of voter suppression laws, finally get their Constitutional Convention with control of enough state legislatures to pass whatever they want.

The end.

Trump was a cancer diagnosis. His election was a symptom of some deep and serious problems with American democracy, and, for better or worse, he's what it took to wake a lot of people up. A lot of people are, for the first time in a long time, starting to realize what's been hiding under rocks in this country, and how all elections are important, right down to county level seats.

If he hadn't of been elected the underlying issues would be quietly eating away at the nation until it was too late to do anything about it.

Maybe we've discovered the seriousness of this sickness in time. I hope so.

If Jackson had done Bywater it would have included hobbits riding war pigs, gatling crossbows and battle balloons, all of them painted in woad and berserking on shrooms.

I prefer my alternate histories to have involvement with Nazis.  You know, like a band of courageous Jews actually kill Hitler, or Nazis set up a colony on the moon, or Nazis resurrect dinosaurs for a new Reich, or Nazis take over the White House, or . . . wait . . .
